A designer house, from the 1980’s, surrounded by a garden of approx. 4,500 m²,
just a few kilometres from a delightful village in the midst of rural Provence
Sillans-la-Cascade, VAR provence-cote-dazur 83690 FR

Location

Sillans-la-Cascade, on the edge of the Verdon Regional Nature Park, is a little village perched above a river. A discovery not to be missed, nestling in a cool, verdant setting, a waterfall and its turquoise lagoon provide an almost magical sight. Castellane castle, a little 18th century gem with its fortified perimeter wall and its defensive towers, transports visitors back to the medieval past of the village, which is also home to attractive narrow streets and little shady squares.
This house is 2 km from Sillans which can be reached via a cycle path.
Verdon Gorges and Sainte-Croix Lake are 25 minutes away, Aix-en-Provence TGV train station is 1¼ hours away and Nice airport is 1½ hours away. The beaches along the Var coast are a 1¼-hour drive and the nearest ski resorts can be reached in about 2½ hours.

Description

Behind the gates, a driveway bordered by bay leaf, juniper and fir trees, leads to a covered garage standing beside the house. The latter can be directly accessed via the garage, but a more pleasant way is to follow the driveway to the main entrance door of the house.
A little further on, an old sheepfold currently houses a studio flat. The land all around is level and wooded; a swimming pool has been installed there between the two buildings, on a terrace, steeped in sunshine all day long. And lastly, at the back under a sloping side of the sheepfold roof, a summer kitchen has been laid out so that residents can take full advantage of the swimming pool and the garden.

The main house

Visitors immediately deem this construction, almost all on one level, original, notably because of the asymmetrical slopes of its roof and its two wings, laid out around a central, 2-storey turret. The southern facade features exposed stone, whilst that on the north side is rendered. The roofs are covered with Roman tiles.

The ground floor
The layout of this level is shaped somewhat like a butterfly. On one side, a lounge with a cathedral living room adjoins a long kitchen which opens on to an east-facing terrace; on the other side, a small corridor provides access to two bedrooms, each with an independent balcony, and a bathroom, with a separate toilet. Floors are decorated with ceramic tiles, featuring floral motifs, in the bedrooms and with classical terracotta tiles in the living rooms.
The first floor
A stairway, housed in the entrance hall, goes up to the turret which comprises a little bedroom, with a shower room and a toilet. Furthermore, a delightful little balcony gives this level, spanning a small surface area, an attractive view over the distant hills.
The basement
The basement, also accessed from the entrance hall, houses a boiler room, a laundry room and a garage that opens on to the garden.

The sheepfold

The old sheepfold has been converted into a self-contained studio flat as a result of renovation works carried out after the construction of the house. This area comprises a bedroom and a shower room with a toilet. The floor is laid with Provencal terracotta tiles; the shower is made of polished concrete and the wash-hand basin of stone. The adjoining, covered summer kitchen provides a pleasantly shaded area that is near to the sun-drenched swimming pool.

The garden

This attractively wooded garden, spanning approx. 4,500 m², is of a good size; olive, pine and fig trees as well as oleander bushes and decoratively trimmed hedges delimit the grounds. A stone well at the end of the garden is but waiting to be fitted with the necessary equipment for watering. A convivial, 10x4 m swimming pool, surrounded by stone decking, has been installed in the space between the two houses. Behind a hedge, approx. 600 m² of the grounds is building land that has not yet been used.

Our opinion

An original and functional architectural property. The diversity of the rooms, the simplicity of their layout and the robustness of the construction are all features that bear witness to a certain level of home comfort, that of the 1980’s. A slightly old-fashioned charm and a decidedly welcoming atmosphere reign throughout these premises. A few modernisation works need to be scheduled, but the house has real embellishment potential, especially as one section of the garden is building land.
A holiday home up until now, it would also be a lovely place to live all year round. This area has very pleasant way of life, that of Provence where the sun rises twice, once in the morning and once after the afternoon nap!
