The commune of Saint-Cloud, just 5 km to the west of Paris, was named after Clovis’ grandson, Clodoald, who came here to find peace and quiet away from family disputes. The town, established on the hillside, looks down on the French capital, the river Seine and Boulogne Woods. It includes numerous green open spaces, the biggest of which, once grounds belonging to the old chateau and now national parklands, spans 460 ha and covers the whole of the south side of the commune. The town can be reached via the tramway (line T2) and the train line L which makes it easy to get to La-Défense, Issy-les-Moulineaux, Saint-Lazare and Versailles. Furthermore, this house is less than 5-minutes’ walk from the train station, the tram stop, Saint-Cloud national park, shops and restaurants. The A13 motorway provides fast links to the A86 and A12 motorways as well as Normandy. Several well-known schools are nearby: the American School of Paris, the German school “Deutsche Schule Paris” and the Montessori School.
A gateway, with an entry phone, protects the entrance to these premises. Following on, an alleyway leads to a door, opening into the garden. This house, spanning a ground and a first floor, topped with an attic, forms an L-shape which marks the corner of the garden. The facade’s plain architecture, probably dating from the 1880’s, is enhanced with continuous, slightly rusticated masonry on the ground floor, whilst the upper section is covered with Virginia creeper.
The two buildings were originally two separate houses. Each, therefore, had an entrance hall and a stairway to the first floor. These features have been preserved and make it very easy to move around the house. The storage area and the boiler room are all on a level with the garden and form a separation between the living rooms of the two old houses. The first house has an entrance hall, with terracotta floor tiles, a kitchen and a dining room, with exposed stone walls. The second comprises an entrance hall leading, right, to a lounge, with parquet flooring, a fireplace as well as direct access to the garden and, left, to a bedroom, with a fireplace, blending in with the verdant surroundings.
It is this floor that has the interior link between the two original houses.
A wooden stairway in the first house goes up to a landing providing access to two bedrooms, both with parquet flooring and a fireplace, as well as to a shower room, with a toilet. A corridor leads to a study or a small bedroom and opens into an upstairs lounge. This wide room, illuminated via two skylights as well as a window, is enhanced by a fireplace, in good working order. In the second house, a wooden stairway, a mirror image of the first, goes up to a landing, leading right to a fourth bedroom, with parquet flooring and a fireplace, a bathroom, a shower room with a toilet and a fifth bedroom, also with parquet flooring and a fireplace. This bedroom, with its view of Saint-Clodoald’s church, gives direct access to the upstairs lounge.
This house, set in the historic district of the royal town near to Saint-Cloud Park, exudes an enthralling air, mixed with authenticity and a touch of mystery. Under the tree branches, around an old stairway or in a nook or cranny, the wood of the parquet flooring and the panelling and the stone of the terracotta tiles and those laid in a chessboard pattern are admirably enhanced by the light flooding in through the windows with their crossbars. It would be so easy to live here in peaceful seclusion, to compose several verses and to have a few pipe dreams. And this, whether sitting by the warm fireside or watching night fall gently on this verdant courtyard-garden. New owners will fully appreciate this property, full of originality, out of sight of onlookers in a wonderful location in the centre of the village, just a stone’s throw from the French capital.
