Bièvres, in the French department of Essonne, is a small town standing at the confluent of the Bièvre and the Sygrie, at the bottom of the verdant valley of the same name. Sought-after for its quality of life, Bièvres still has its provincial village air, halfway between Paris and Versailles, near to the plateau of Saclay and its renowned schools and universities. The forest surrounding the town is ideal for those who enjoy practicing sport, for hikers and for those who like to take long walks along the pathways. The town centre is delightful and includes numerous shops. The Museum of Photography, on the outskirts of the town, is one of the biggest on an international scale, with photographs taken by Nicéphore-Niepce and some of the most illustrious of contemporary photographs. Paris is easily accessible via the N118, with slip roads for the A86 motorway going to Versailles or Créteil.
The main house, adorned with a neo-classical pediment, inspired by Greek temples, spans a surface area of 160 m², comprising several bedrooms, a large study, a vast kitchen and its veranda.
Facing the main building, a second house spanning 100 m² was once the old printing workshop. Its roof, covered with glazed tiles reflecting green hues, blends in with the natural surroundings. Inside, a reception lounge features 18th century decor. Under a Victorian style, coffered ceiling, the walls are covered with magnificent period panelling which particularly enhances a monumental stone fireplace.
This property also includes two other buildings, respectively spanning 25 and 90 m², which could house accommodation for a couple and a 4-person family. The last building, laid out longwise, is divided into three rooms: a wine cellar, a spa with a sauna and a Jacuzzi as well as a garden shed.
A lush, romantic garden is home to a jumble of birch and poplar trees, bamboo, cherubs, bowls and other statues. A fountain feeds an outdoor pond with its koi carp.
The main house
This building can be accessed via the garden, the kitchen or via a door concealed on the south side of the house. The main entrance is topped with two lanterns that illuminate the double wrought iron doors. Once over the threshold, a Baroque style lounge features large windows, with old frames, a moulded ceiling and sumptuous trumeaux. The walls, with their pastel hues, are decorated with panelling and make the room a welcoming, convivial area.
The kitchen, reflecting lighter hues, opens on to a veranda, looking out over the garden. Opposite, a little hall area leads to two bathrooms: the first decked in blue, the second decorated in pink marble. Further on, the main, east-facing bedroom, with a view of the garden, is bathed in morning light. This level also includes another two bedrooms: one lined with Toile-de-Jouy wallpaper, featuring floral motifs, the other decorated in yellow.
Upstairs are two bedrooms and a large study.
“The workshop” or reception lounge
Facing the main house, a new building dubbed “the workshop”, also reflects a neo-classical style. A front terrace makes it possible for residents to appreciate a view of the garden all through the year. Double wrought iron doors provide access to a vast, elegant, 50 m² reception lounge, under a high ceiling. The latter, reflecting a Venetian style, features a succession of carved coffered squares that blend beautifully with the Burgundy stone floor tiles and their inlaid decoration. Carved wooden panelling with inlay covers all the walls, featuring bull’s eye windows and exuding a particularly 18th century air. All the frames for the double French windows, with their casement bolts, are also made of wood.
On a mezzanine, reached via a straight stairway, a large study looks down on to the lounge. One of the walls is completely covered with bookshelves.
A dining room, following on from the lounge, is large enough to accommodate several guests and is illuminated via large windows. Under exposed ceiling beams, the floor is covered with ceramic floral tiles. It precedes a kitchen area.
The caretaker’s cottage
Built on the property’s second plot of land, this totally independent, 90 m² house is currently used as a guest house. The ground floor comprises a kitchen, a toilet, a bathroom and a wide, bright lounge, with a view over the garden. Upstairs are two bedrooms as well as a kitchen and a second bathroom. A south-facing terrace can be reached from the lounge via double French windows.
The studio flat-house
Standing at the entrance to the property, this little house with its glazed tiles and a door topped with a lantern, could be used as a studio flat for accommodating staff or a young adult seeking independence. The ground floor comprises a utility area, housing a boiler room, and a shower room. Upstairs, an 11 m² bedroom is not too big or too small.
The south wing
A last building is laid out longwise on the south side of the house and can be reached via the garden. It comprises three adjoining areas: a wine cellar spanning a surface area of 8 m², an 11 m² spa with a Jacuzzi, an exercise room and a sauna. The last room, at the end of the building and the garden, is a shed for storing gardening equipment.
The lock-up garage
Accessed via a remote-controlled door, the garage includes a charging station for an electric car.
