near Sceaux Park and Colbert Lake in Plessis-Robinson
Just 8 km from Paris, between Sceaux and Fontenay-aux Roses, the town of Plessis-Robinson owes its name, in part, to Robinson-Crusoe. In the 1840’s, Joseph-Gueusquin, a Parisian restaurant owner, discovered the delightful, little town of Plessis-Picquet, lost amidst the trees in the Vallée-aux-Loups (valley of the wolves). He decided to set up a “guinguette” (open-air café with a dance floor) perched in a tree. He named it “Au Grand Robinson”, in tribute to Johann-David-Wyss’ novel “The Swiss Family Robinson”, which was, in turn, inspired by Daniel-Defoe’s work. For more than a century, Parisians came to laze about and dance under the canopy.
Nowadays, the town can be reached via the RER train line B (just a 10-minute walk from the house) which provides short links to Paris. This house is but a few minutes from the shops in the centre of Sceaux and Fontenay-aux-Roses. Several renowned schools such as the Lycée-Lakanal, the Lycée-Marie-Curie, the private Sophie-Barat school in Châtenay-Malabry and Les-Renards primary school are nearby. Bus route 194 goes to Porte-d'Orléans as well as the aforementioned schools.
Behind the house, facing west, a terrace looks down on to the garden which is home to a mixture of Atlas cedar, catalpa, conifer, olive and Mexican orange trees as well as a vast lawn. At the end, at the foot of a flight of stone steps, a completely unoverlooked, 8.5x3.5 m swimming pool is surrounded by a wooden terrace and coping. A heat pump makes it possible to control the temperature of the water.
Once through the entrance gates and the wide, basket-handle-arched, carved oak wood front door, the visit of the house begins in the lounge. A long room, it is laid with old, black and grey marbled floor tiles featuring motifs and looks out over the garden and the natural setting. Light floods into the room via a wide, south-facing, picture window. An exposed stone wall on the east side features a wide oak beam and is enhanced with an impressive stained-glass window and its shimmering colours. Adjoining the lounge, the sober and spacious, fitted kitchen is laid out around a stainless-steel counter and numerous cupboards. This room is particularly bright courtesy of the presence of two wide windows, protected by bars. A serving hatch, between the lounge and the kitchen, is typical of 1950’s architecture. Further on are a wardrobe and a separate toilet.
At the end of the lounge, a finely wrought oak wood stairway is the work of a master craftsman. It goes up to the first floor of the house which comprises two bedrooms, a study and a bathroom. The main bedroom, with parquet flooring, has a dual, north-south aspect. The second, south facing bedroom is smaller and looks out over the garden. The bathroom features two wash-hand basins and a bath, directly illuminated via a bull’s eye window.
Reached via the interior stairway or via a door in the south facade of the house, this level is laid out with two bedrooms, looking out over the garden through wide windows. A shower room, partially decorated with polished concrete, is fitted with two wash-hand basins, a shower and a toilet. A utility room, preceding a laundry room, houses a Weismann boiler.
With its refined lines, its minimalism and its cubic facade, this house evokes an impressive and quiet, perfectly geometric building that blends in with the landscape. It is an ideal example of an architectural era that sought simplicity and functionality, values dear to Le-Corbusier and André-Lurçat. Inside, the house has but a single purpose, that of providing comfort. Using first-class materials, it is easy-to-maintain and bright, its wide windows providing maximum luminosity as well as a view extending over the garden. There is no doubt that the biggest asset of this home is its swimming pool. Set amidst the trees and unoverlooked, it is a promise of quiet, lazy afternoons when the weather is clement.
