Location
The building is nestled in the charming Saint-Louis neighbourhood of Versailles, beside the cathedral and opposite the Potager du Roi: the royal kitchen garden that produced fresh fruit and vegetables for the court of King Louis XIV. It is also a stone’s throw from Les Carrés: old squares lined with quaint little houses built under King Louis XV. And it is just a five-minute walk from the renowned Montansier theatre and from the entrance to the sumptuous Palace of Versailles and its royal opera house. The neighbourhood was built where King Louis XIII’s Parc-aux-cerfs game reserve used to lie. It was created to support the court who joined King Louis XIV in Versailles from 1682 onwards. Dukes and peers of France then built private mansions in this district, as did certain courtiers. In recent years, the city’s local authorities have renovated the area, which has been given back its original elegance. This can be seen in many well-preserved tokens of the neighbourhood’s rich past, including the Recollects Convent, the Royal Tennis Court and the former headquarters of the royal Secretaries of State for Foreign Affairs and the Navy. The streets Rue de l’Orangerie and Rue Royale, which offer many shops and restaurants, are only a few dozen metres from the property. And the major train station Versailles-Chantiers is just twenty minutes away on foot.
Description
The lounge, dining room and office lie on the west side of the apartment. They are filled with daylight from tall Cremona-bolt windows that offer clear views over the magnificent Potager du Roi – the former royal kitchen garden – and, beyond it, the Pièce d'eau des Suisses – the chateau’s grand ornamental lake. The 24m² lounge includes a stone fireplace with a wide hearth. The 19m² office is lined with glazed bookcases along three of its walls. The dining room is cosier in size. Its style is uncluttered and its wall mouldings are plain.
On the courtyard side is a 17m² bedroom. Like the apartment’s other side, this bedroom is not overlooked. It enjoys natural brightness from its two windows, through which you can admire sunrises. In the middle of one side, an alcove made for a bed gives the bedroom character and privacy. The bathroom, next to the bedroom, includes a large bathtub and a shower cubicle that is well hidden behind a door. The elegantly fitted kitchen features high-quality taps, like the bathroom.
Our opinion
The Saint-Louis area of Versailles is doubtless one of the most emblematic neighbourhoods of the entire Paris region. There, the rich history of France unfolded – from the Sun King, Louis XIV, to the eventful French Revolution – between the district’s wide cobbled streets and the mansard slate roofs of its quaint squares. Anywhere in the Saint-Louis neighbourhood of Versailles would be a wonderful location for a family to settle into, given the splendour of its well-preserved architecture. But this apartment offers an especially remarkable opportunity: the chance to live beside the magnificent grounds of the Palace of Versailles and look straight down over the vast royal kitchen garden from where nature’s fragrances come to fill your dwelling. These resplendent surroundings are reflected in every detail of this delightful apartment. A charming historical atmosphere pervades the property. Flat tints of pearl grey, royal blue and apple green magnify a noble, classical decor without spoiling the place’s timeless elegance.
