Location

180 km from Paris, 12 km from Vendôme and 9 km from a TGV train station, with 40-minute links to Paris. The nearest shops are in a village less than 3 km away. The countryside varies greatly between valleys, plateaux and hills, between bocage, farming, wood and forest landscapes.

Description

A driveway, almost a kilometre long, leads from the road through trees to this chateau, built in the hollow of a valley. Backing on to the hillside and the woods, the chateau looks widely out to the west and south over the parklands as well as the fields and copses covering the neighbouring hillsides. The outbuildings, once used for farming purposes, are laid out in three groups, aligned along the south-facing slope. On the edge of the wood, above the chateau, a west-facing belvedere is a privileged gathering place.

The chateau

Initially constructed in the 16th century and then transformed on many occasions, the main building is now rectangular and spans two levels. It is topped with a saddleback roof set between two straight gables. The centre of the eaves wall still features a vestige of a third level, an old window topped with a hip roof standing higher than the ridge. The only casement window, typical of the Renaissance era, is set above the main entrance, itself crowned with a double ogee arch. The other more modest windows, are framed with a plain rabbet.
A second, single-storey building, set at right angles to the main building, backs on to the hillside. Spanning a surface area of 68 m², it comprises a living room, three bedrooms, a shower room, a toilet and a boiler room. And lastly, taking up the last corner of the courtyard, a hexagonal, two-storey turret.


Basement
Spanning a surface area of approx. 63 m², this level is predominantly laid out under the lounge and the vestibule. It is illuminated via two basement windows.
Ground floor
Some original features inside the chateau have successfully come down through the ages. The ground floor comprises three vast rooms. A vestibule, opening on to the courtyard and the parklands, gives access, on one side, to a lounge and, on the other, to a dining room. The triple aspect lounge faces east, south and west. Its ceiling features exposed beams, the floor is paved with terracotta and the fireplace made of local white stone. The dining room faces east and west, the beams are painted and a marble mantel tops the fireplace. The kitchen has a similar aspect and opens on to the courtyard. The terracotta tiles are smaller, whilst a monumental fireplace has a single stylish feature, that of curved sculpted capitals. A stone sink is still in use. Two stairways provide access to the upstairs, one from the vestibule and the other from the kitchen.
First floor
The stairways going up from the ground floor lead but to the first floor. The one in the vestibule gives access to two bedrooms, each with a shower room and toilet. Whilst the one in the kitchen goes up to a mezzanine which communicates with one of these two bedrooms. A third bedroom, with a water supply point, can also be reached via this stairway.
Attic
A spiral stairway goes up to the attic space. This area is taken up by a room which, although perfectly insulated, needs completion of its conversion to make it habitable. Another stairway, accessed via a pulley system, leads to a bedroom, with a shower room and toilet.

The outbuildings


Winery
Facing north-south, this is the outbuilding nearest to the chateau. It was constructed at right angles to the cowsheds. The walls are composed of exposed quarry stone blocks. Two wide arched windows let in light and heat. Upstairs, a hanging dormer is set in the roof. Spanning a surface area of approx. 129 m², this old wine storehouse comprises a ground floor, with a living room, divided into two areas by two arcades, and an upstairs, with two bedrooms and a shower room.
Stable
The entrance is set in the south-facing gable wall. The west facade is flanked by a lower building, housing the old pigsties. The walls are made of quarry stone blocks and the gable roof features skylights. The ground floor of the cowshed is well-preserved, in its original condition. The upstairs has been rehabilitated into a flat, spanning approx. 69 m². It includes a living room, two bedrooms and a shower room. An arched window under the roof slope makes it possible to appreciate the view stretching into the distance.
The stables
The stables are very similar to the cowshed. They house three horse loose boxes, topped with a hayloft.
Gardener house
This cottage stands at right angles to the stables. Spanning a surface area of approx. 65 m², it comprises a living room, with a fireplace, a bedroom, with a bread oven, and a bathroom on the ground floor. The upstairs comprises three bedrooms and a shower room.
Caretaker’s accommodation
Exposed quarry stone walls are topped with a gable roof, covered with tiles. The south-facing eaves wall features two windows. Spanning a surface area of approx. 35 m², it comprises a living room, a bedroom and a shower room. In the same building, on the east side of the house, a barn is used for storage purposes.
Barn
Spanning a ground surface area of approx. 125 m², this barn is used as a garage and extended by a wooden lean-to.

Our opinion

Despite its many modifications, this Renaissance-style chateau still exudes an undeniable architectural character. The current owner has carried out a great number of works to preserve the building and give it modern-day home comforts. The only real luxury is its spacious setting especially as the latter remains intact from the hollow of the valley right up to the top of the neighbouring hills.
