A house with green shutters, the charm of the 1930’s
and the hidden gem of its valley-like garden
Quimper, FINISTERE brittany 29000 FR

Mount-Frugy, to the west of Brittany in the Cornouaille region, dominates Quimper. This house is part of a quiet, residential district, established on one of its hillsides, forming a valley for the river Odet. Like a little urban paradise, near to amenities, public transport, schools and cultural centres, this family haven benefits from the discreet privilege of a vast, enclosed garden where vegetation rules.

This house reveals its sunniest facade to visitors. Beyond a private parking area, closed by electrified gates, a gable stairway goes up to the first level.
The house is extended to the rear by a vast terrace that looks down on to the garden, planted with decorative species and fruit trees.

The house

Composed of a single building, this house has a sober design. It is topped with a half-hipped, slate roof. Its facades feature symmetrical openings, most of which are arched. The lower exposed stone section constitutes and enhances the exterior ornamentation: coloured rendering highlights the darker surrounds framing the openings and their woodwork. Discreetly elegant and welcoming, this house, nevertheless, reflects an authentic urban presence. It bears witness to a period of architectural change where notions of functionality and adaptation to modern life took precedence over decoration. Its interior layout, designed in a similar vein, offers compact areas, bright rooms and high ceilings, enhanced solely with panelling featuring rectilinear moulding.

Garden level
The back door provides access to a laundry room which leads not only to a room currently in use as a workshop but also to a corridor. The latter provides access to a bedroom, with a wash-hand basin, and to a stairway going up to the reception floor. This level has floor tiles throughout.
First level
A flight of rectilinear steps leads to the main front door of the house. A corridor leads, very functionally, to the stairway, a double, south-facing living room, a kitchen, with a view of the garden, and a toilet. An original fireplace is set in a corner of the living room, laid with strip pattern parquet flooring. Like the corridor, the fitted kitchen has floor tiles. A door opens into the lounge.
Second level
The stairway, illuminated via a window, goes up to the top floor and its three bedrooms. A very spacious bathroom is fitted with two wash-hand basins, a bath and a toilet.

The garden

Bordered by a terrace looking down on to it and spanning a landscaped surface area spanning approx. 1,100 m², the garden constitutes a verdant islet that is rare for urban properties. It is planted with old ornamental as well as fruit trees and slopes downwards following the lie of the hillside. This layout makes it ideal for enjoying a peaceful, leisurely retreat, for accommodating children’s games or even for establishing a vegetable patch or for enhancing the actual garden. It could easily accommodate an extension of the ground surface area of the building.

Our opinion

This authentic house is characteristic of an era, the district is quiet. The facilities provided by the town are just a stone’s throw away. The garden is planted with old trees and, owing to its exceptional surface area and the topography of the premises, could be used for a variety of purposes. These assets guarantee new owners a happy and healthy family way of life. Although the house definitely needs to be brought in line with current standards as regards modern-day comforts and uses, it holds great potential in that it would suit multiple personalisation, enhancement, restructuring or even extension projects without great sums having to be invested.
