an entirely renovated 1940s villa
Deauville, the iconic Norman coastal resort, a 2-hour drive or train journey from Paris. Inland, the green, flower-filled countryside so typical of Normandy provides the backdrop for the bustling town.
The walls of the 1940s villa are coated in a pale colour. Sobre stone mouldings emphasise features, in particular the lines of the balcony. Some of the gracefully arched windows are framed with columns or highlighted by a moulded entablature.
A two-car garage opens directly onto the street. A corridor leads to two large rooms with garden access and two smaller rooms used as a workshop and storage space, and a toilet.
A flight of 12 steps leads to a sheltered threshold. The door opens onto a modern stone-paved corridor, which serves all the rooms on this floor: a double living room with a generous arched window, a bedroom with ensuite bathroom and toilet, the kitchen and dining room. At the other end of the corridor, a wooden staircase leads to the first floor.
The living room is wallpapered, and other walls are painted white. Straight parquet flooring throughout, with a coloured mosaic tile feature in the living room. The rooms are bright thanks to large windows.
This floor has slightly sloping ceilings.
The walls are painted white. Straight parquet flooring on the landing. The landing leads to two bedrooms, a shower room and separate toilet. Both bedrooms have patio doors opening onto a small balcony.
The garden is secluded from the house and sheltered from the street by a thuja hedge. Dotted with bushes, small trees and flowers, this cosy spot hides a shady paved patio large enough to house a table and chairs.
Deauville’s Parisian elegance has earned the seaside town a worldwide reputation. To live here is to follow in the footsteps of Coco Chanel, Tristan Bernard and André Citroën. To walk the streets of Deauville is to step back in time, to take in some of the best examples of seaside architecture.
The villas and other architectural follies off place Morny are as exuberant as they are varied.
More discreet, this villa is the perfect base from which to enjoy or observe the ambient worldliness.
