Description

This east-west facing house stands between two one-way streets. On one side, the facade borders the street. A gateway provides access to a little courtyard able to take a town car. On the other side, the garden is enclosed by walls. To the south and extending the little courtyard, a veranda flanks the house and looks out over the garden.

The house

This house, constructed from quarry stone blocks in the middle of the 19th century, spans approx. 145 m² of living space over two levels, topped with a Mansard-style, slate roof. Three roof dormers on both facades illuminate the upstairs. Their wooden surrounds are topped with triangular pediments. The openings on the ground floor are framed with freestone surrounds.


Ground floor
This level is divided into four main rooms. The entrance lobby provides access to a little lounge, with a large, sober, stone fireplace, a dining room and a wooden stairway going upstairs. One door opens into a bigger lounge, with strip pattern parquet flooring, whitened beams and walls lined with bookshelf units. Another, glazed door opens into the dining room. A spacious room, its ceiling joists still feature their original colour, whilst its openings, facing west over the garden, let in copious amounts of light. Reached via a semi-glazed door, with wooden decoration, a fitted kitchen opens on to a veranda which forms a link between the courtyard, on the road side, the kitchen and the garden. The ground floor also includes a cloakroom and a toilet.
First floor
The landing provides access to four rooms. A main bedroom, very bright all day long, is adjoined by a study and a bathroom. Two bedrooms have exposed beams and double windows. A shower room with a toilet. A last room, on a half-floor, could be used as a study, a games room or an additional bedroom. Once again, the air of a country house is omnipresent courtesy of exposed beams, old doors and roof dormers.

The garden

This west-facing garden, spanning a surface area of approx. 75 m², is completely enclosed by walls. Laid to lawn, it is filled with trees and flowers, including wisteria, climbing roses and flowering shrubs. A terrace has been laid out facing the dining room so that residents can enjoy meals outside on sunny days.

Our opinion

Whether in the house or in the garden, visitors immediately feel a change of scenery. The countryside is omnipresent, both in form and in mind, courtesy of the building’s architecture, the interior layout of the house and, of course, the flower-filled garden. Residents simply have to leave the house to take full advantage of a lively district, notably featuring a well-known market, as well as all the attractions of Tours’ town centre.
