Location
The theatre-cathedral district, in the heart of Tours, is one of the oldest in the town. Now renowned for its beautiful buildings, its monuments and its local shops, it is one of town’s most sought-after sectors. Shops, schools, public transport, everything is within walking distance. The TGV train station is just 5 minutes away. This house is set back in second place off Rue-de-la-Scellerie, a one-way street, lined with art galleries, antique shops, jewellers and boutiques selling decorative items.
Description
The house
The architecture of the house is extremely sober. Its rendered quarry block or freestone walls are topped with a slate roof. The house spans approx. 150 m² of living space over three levels. The entrance hall on the ground floor is widely illuminated via large picture windows. It provides direct access to a spacious living room, with a high ceiling. Light floods in through tall windows that look out over the second, south-facing courtyard. A semi-open-plan kitchen is fully fitted. A boiler room and a toilet. The oak wood stairway is old. Halfway up is a bathroom, with a toilet.
The first floor, laid with strip pattern, oak wood parquet flooring throughout, is taken up by the main, south-facing bedroom, with its shower room and toilet, as well as a second bedroom. Once again, the ceilings are of a comfortable height. Halfway up to the second floor is a linen room.
The second floor, also laid with parquet flooring throughout, comprises two bedrooms, a shower room, with a toilet, and a study.
The house is completed with attic space and a large vaulted cellar.
Our opinion
It is difficult to feel more in Tours than here. The district relates the town’s history and the house, far from any nuisance, blends homogeneously in with the other buildings. The discovery of these premises, completely out of sight of any onlookers, is a lovely surprise.
The interior layout makes use of all available space. The paved courtyards are but invitations to eat outside. Urban life here gains a little additional spirit.
