Location

In unspoilt, verdant countryside, 30 minutes from Poitiers, with its TGV train station providing 75-minute links between Paris and Bordeaux several times a day; 20 minutes from Futuroscope. The TGV trains also provide 2½-hour links to Charles-de-Gaulle airport. Shops and amenities are less than 10 minutes away. Poitier airport has direct flights to London, Lyon and Montpellier.

Description

In the shelter of a hamlet, the houses standing side by side in the expected manner, this discreet, exposed stone facade features a front door, six windows and a porch. The latter looks out over the garden, used by cars and pedestrians. This house is constructed in an L-shape, one end of which has a covered area and outbuildings bordering the garden section.

The house

The original dwelling has been enhanced with an extension. Protruding into the garden, it houses a new entrance hall and a kitchen. All the facades have been renovated and all the windows have been replaced with double-glazing. It comprises two buildings, the house and its adjoining outbuildings.


Ground floor
The entrance hall provides access to a dining room, a lounge and a kitchen. The lounge, with wooden flooring just like the dining room, has a fireplace. Between the lounge and the dining room are a guest toilet and a stairway going upstairs. Another stairway goes down from the kitchen to a cellar, housing a wood-pellet-fired boiler. The fully fitted kitchen, laid with floor tiles like the entrance hall, looks out over the garden.
First floor
A bedroom and, next to it, a bathroom with a toilet. A study, overlooking the garden, and a hall area lead to the other section of the house, laid out in the outbuildings.
Second floor
On the second floor of the main house are two bedrooms with, between them, a bathroom and toilet. This section has electric heating.

The adjoining outbuildings

The adjoining outbuildings, forming part of the house, communicate with the first floor of the main house, whilst the sections laid out on the ground floor have independent openings looking out over the garden.


First floor
A room, following on from the hall area on the first floor of the house, has been converted into a projection room and opens into another hall area-library, with a corridor leading to two bedrooms, a bathroom, a toilet and the main bedroom, with its own bathroom, dressing room and a bedroom spanning approx. 30 m². This section has electric heating.
Ground floor
A stairway goes down from the hall area-library to the ground floor, comprising a games room, a billiard room and a linen room, all opening on to the garden.

The garden

Full advantage has been taken of its size as a car can cross the garden to the covered area and the outbuildings, without touching the grassy section which has been laid out around an 8x4 m swimming pool. The latter is heated by the wood-pellet-fired boiler and can be filled with water from the well, also used for an automatic watering system. An insulated pool-house could be heated, making it possible to use the pool off season. The stone buildings comprising the house and the outbuildings as well as the outside walls are enhanced with Mediterranean plants.

The outbuildings

These comprise a covered area where several cars can park, two lock-up garages, a heated workshop and a storage area, housing the pool machinery. The covered area also includes a stairway going up to the first floor, laid out above the garage, the workshop and the storage area, the latter also having a stairway.

Our opinion

The old French expression “Pour vivre heureux, vivons caché” (to live happily means living hidden away) could be the motto of this house, out of sight of onlookers and ideal for those seeking protected privacy. Everything here is well-balanced. Not only could the house be adapted to suit all ways of life and all projects, but the garden is also an invitation to take full advantage of a well-thought-out exterior, with a grassy area, trees, flower beds as well as a swimming pool which can but delight enthusiasts of plain good taste.
