Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR

Location

This property is in the Touraine region, between town and country, on a plateau just a few minutes from the Indre Valley. Its named locality is in an ideal setting, on the outskirts of a little town with all shops, schools and amenities. A train station, just a few minutes away, provides links to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps and then Paris via the TGV. Slip roads for the A10 motorway, 4 km away, make it possible to reach the French capital in 2½ hours.

Description

This property is composed of several buildings laid out in a U-shape around the courtyard of the old farmhouse. A long lane, bordered by fields, leads from the road to the property entrance. Flanked by impressive stone pillars, wrought iron gates stand facing the house. The outbuildings delimit the property on two sides. The courtyard is extended by a section of more densely wooded land, including a pond. Nearby, a vegetable garden and a garden are behind the house.

The house

Constructed in 1850 from rendered stone masonry, with freestone quoins, this house comprises a main, rectangular building, all on a level, with a central, 2-storey section. Its hip roof, with zinc finials on the central section, and its gable roofs on the wings are all covered with slate. The main facade features a symmetrical alignment of openings.

Ground floor
The vestibule, with terracotta floor tiles and a wooden stairway going up to the first floor in the central section, provides access to a shower room, with a toilet, on one side, and a kitchen facing the entrance door. The tiled kitchen has a brick fireplace, with a stone lintel, and features exposed ceiling beams. It gives access, on one side, to a dining room, with a fireplace, a bread oven and terracotta floor tiles. On the other side, it opens into a lounge, with a freestone fireplace and floor tiles, followed by a living room, also enhanced with a freestone fireplace. The ceiling beams are exposed. A glazed door leads from the lounge to a terrace behind the house. A door on the main facade opens from the outside into a room, awaiting conversion, with a vast attic above.
First floor
The landing provides access, on one side, to a toilet and two bedrooms, with attic space above. On the other side, a corridor leads to a shower room and two bedrooms, all with terracotta floor tiles.

The barn

Constructed from quarry stone blocks with freestone quoins, this barn spans a rectangular surface area of 210 m², with a central porch. The gable roof on the main building is covered with slate, that on the porch is hipped and covered with flat tiles. On one side, several storage areas back on to the barn and another two buildings adjoin the wall enclosing the courtyard.

The farm building

Spanning a ground surface area of 400 m², this 2-storey farm building is composed of quarry stone blocks with freestone quoins. Its gable roof is covered with slate. Four hanging dormers and numerous openings, with freestone surrounds, align the facade. This long building comprises numerous cowsheds and stables, bearing witness to the property’s past activity.

The land

The courtyard, in the centre of the buildings, is laid out around the old slurry pit. The land on the south side is more densely wooded, with a wide pond amidst the undergrowth. An old vegetable garden is nearby. The land goes around the house to the rear terrace.

Our opinion

The farmhouse and its outbuildings bear witness to an ancient way of life, with roots anchored in its land and its region. The farm, still a going concern up until the last century, is of an outstanding and promising size. Renovation works would, no doubt, enhance the many, remaining, noteworthy architectural features and give the property back its splendour of yesteryear. Residents have their very own age-old painting taking in the French countryside, from the field to the cowshed and from the pond to the undergrowth.
