Amongst the elegant towns to be found to the west of Paris, set in the undulating meanders of the river Seine, Bougival is one of a kind. Dubbed the “Impressionists’ town”, it was a rallying point and a source of inspiration without equal for Berthe-Morisot, Claude-Monet, Alfred-Sisley and many others. This house stands in the district between Louveciennes hill and that of Jonchère, now known as the “Impressionists’ hill”. In the streets, numerous houses reflect the features of the Belle Époque when brick and stone were intermingled. The river is very near and is bordered by embankments, abounding in shops, craftsmen and restaurants. Louveciennes and Bougival train stations make it possible to reach the French capital, 17 km away, and Saint-Lazare within 30 minutes.
Description
This house, standing in Bougival town centre on the Impressionists’ hill, dates from the 19th century. The facade on the road side features three windows, enhanced with wrought iron arches, under a wooden roofing framework. It is also adorned with metal lintels and friezes, cross wall ties and wrought iron railings. In the middle, a semi-circular arched French window opens on to a little balcony. This town house spans a floor surface area of approx. 150 m² over three levels. The ground floor is laid out with a corridor providing successive access to a garage, a laundry room, a cellar and a bedroom with a shower room. On the first floor, a living room and a kitchen open on to a 28 m² terrace. The top floor is taken up by two bedrooms, a study and a bathroom.
The house and the terrace
The glazed front door, decorated with cast iron scrolls, opens on the ground floor into a corridor providing access to a large garage, with a mezzanine, a laundry room, a cellar and a bedroom, with its own shower room. This level could be used as a little, self-contained studio flat. A turning, wooden stairway goes up to the first floor, given over to reception areas. A living room is illuminated via two windows and enhanced with a straight, natural stone fireplace. The terracotta floor tiles contrast in a classical manner with the white and grey walls, which enhance the floral motifs on the period, cast iron radiators. Following on, a kitchen, surrounded by atrium windows, stands out because of its luminosity. This room provides access to a wooden, fully enclosed terrace. The landing on the second floor, under the roof, provides access to two bedrooms, with parquet flooring, a bathroom, with a shower and a bath, as well as a study. The first bedroom, overlooking the street, features a semi-circular arched, French window, fitted with railings. The second bedroom, on the other side, includes a large wardrobe, closed by slatted doors.
Our opinion
From the top of its wooded hill, Bougival looks lazily out over the verdant banks of the river Seine. Living here is to follow in the footsteps of impressionists such as Pissaro and Renoir who immortalised locks and rowers. The town still exudes its village atmosphere dating from this era. Not far from the embankments, this townhouse stretches skywards. With its terracotta floor tiles, its bare stone fireplace and its brick facade, it comprises an unpretentious but authentic home, featuring rustic and rural decor. Winter days promise to be cosy, sitting reading poetry by the fireside.
