A 160 m² house in pristine condition, its garden and its artist’s studio,
just a stone’s throw from the Coulée-Verte in Paris’ 14th arrondissement
Paris, PARIS ile-de-france 75014 FR

This house stands in a quiet, little street, running parallel to the verdant stretch known as Coulée-Verte in Paris’ 14th arrondissement. Originally constructed to let the little train pass through the French capital in the 19th century, a time when the plain was covered with orchards and mills, this way became covered with vegetation and is now Paris’ oldest cycle path. The occasion to enjoy a pleasant walk through the town and explore the streets in the Plaisance district, where Haussmannian facades mix with workmen’s cottages. Rue-Didot, a shopping street renowned for its little restaurants, is also nearby. It leads directly to the Gaîté district, with its theatres, as well as to Montparnasse and public transport services.

This discreet, white house gives no indication from the street of the living space contained within. The front door opens on to the ground floor, almost entirely taken up by a reception room, spanning more than 60 m². This room, comprising areas laid out as a large and a small lounge, a dining room and a fully fitted kitchen, is filled with through light. On the north side, a large, porthole-shaped window looks out over the street; on the south side, two large, double French windows provide direct access to the garden and the artist’s studio. All the openings are secure and double-glazed. Along a wall in the large lounge, a wood-burning stove, bordered by ceramic floor tiles, is a promise of warm evenings by the fireside. Strip pattern parquet flooring further enhances the luminosity of this room, in particular the green mosaic tile splashback in the kitchen. A discreet door on one side opens into a guest toilet. Further on, another door leads to a small garage, big enough to be used for storing garden furniture and bicycles or for installing a laundry room.
Opposite the front door, a turning, wooden stairway goes upstairs, where a wide landing provides access to a large bedroom, spanning almost 30 m², with its wide, elm wood bookshelf unit, two bedrooms, spanning approx. 15 m² and looking out over the garden, a bathroom and a separate toilet. This level also has the same strip pattern parquet flooring and large, double-glazed windows.
The south-facing garden, filled with flowers, is big enough to create a feeling of almost total isolation due to the fact that it is not overlooked. Behind the tall olive tree and the rose beds, the town is easily forgotten. Consequently, this is the ideal setting for its artist’s studio, spanning approx. 17 m². Surrounded by glass and vegetation, this area is flooded with light all day long.

Our opinion

The tranquillity of a country house in the midst of one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. A first-class, unpretentious setting that is ingeniously laid out in the aim of encouraging reflection and inventiveness. These premises, from the artist’s studio, steeped in light, to the kitchen, embellished with green tiles and wood, are an ideal home for a pleasant way of life, where everyone has enough privacy to give free rein to their creativity. After all, as Napoleon once said, imagination governs the world.
