Location
The south of Ille-et-Vilaine enjoys an exceptional heritage and natural environment. The megalithic standing stones on the crest of the Saint-Just moors are part of a major Neolithic site, and the banks of the Vilaine offer various pleasant footpaths. The property is located in a village of 1500 inhabitants, mobilised on ecological issues and committed to a roadmap of sustainable development and planning. The regional capital is about 50 km away and is served by a TER rail link. From Rennes, the TGV journey time to Paris is an hour and a half. All amenities can be reached in less than ten minutes.
Description
At a certain distance from the centre of the town, but not totally isolated, the property extends over almost five hectares of open countryside, with a variety of natural and agricultural landscapes. The entrance to the property from a small road is marked by a gate opening onto a gravel courtyard, surrounded by a wall, the manor house and a small tower. Beyond, on the south and west sides, some outbuildings are used as sheds. Outdoors, the property consists mainly of gardens, wooded areas or undergrowth, a pond and streams, and a meadow to the south.
The manor house
The origins date back to the 15th century but it was extensively remodelled in the 19th century. Today, the manor comprises several buildings added over time, presented in an L shape, all connected. On the south side, a tower abuts the main building at right angles. The slate roofs are gabled and the walls are undressed local stone, granite and schist. The window frames are mostly red brick, and some of the doors feature round arches or ogives, showing the diversity and richness of the earlier remodelling. It has two levels under the attic and two cellars. The south-facing terrace provides access to the delightful garden.
The ground floor
A short flight of steps leads up to the ogive arched door opening into the main entrance of the manor. Most of the rooms on the ground floor are full-width and can be accessed through French windows from the outside, both from the courtyard and the garden, giving a sense of permanent connection with the outdoors. The entrance hall leads to a kitchen with a central island and a fireplace, extended by a laundry room on one side and a living room with a fireplace, parquet floor and beamed ceiling on the other. A round-arched opening on the south side of the living room joins the main building at right angles. It leads to a dining room with stone walls and a ceiling with exposed beams and joists. The floor is tiled and the room also has a fireplace with insert. In the extension, on the east side, follows a second living room with high ceilings, tiled floor and either exposed stone or panelled walls. A staircase leads from here and from the entrance to the first floor. Adjacent to this living room but accessed separately and only from the courtyard, a bedroom with parquet floor and a bathroom.
The first floor
Two corridors joined by opposite staircases serve five bedrooms with shower rooms and toilets. Two bedrooms are connected by the tower on the south side, housing a small reading area. A sixth attic bedroom with bathroom, separate from the others, is reached by a staircase starting from the laundry room. A linen room completes the complex in the upper extension of this bedroom.
The second floor
A final bedroom with shower room and toilet has been created in the attic. It features two very beautiful trusses.
The outbuildings
The guest house
In the courtyard sits a tower built with local stones and topped by a conical roof with sprockets. A former oratory, now a small dwelling, offers a living room and a bathroom on the ground floor and a bedroom on the first floor.

Butting onto the southern part of the manor house, it is on two levels: a living room with kitchen on the ground floor and a bedroom with bathroom upstairs.
The outbuilding
To the west of the manor house, a building comprises three spaces. The first is used as a reception area as well as a workshop. The large room with a mezzanine enjoys a high ceiling. It opens directly onto a second space, in which a small raised round swimming pool has been installed. All the walls are exposed stone. In the extension of this building follow two spaces used as sheds.
The garage
Various sheds for storage of equipment and garages complete the complex.
The garden
The garden, which covers about 4 hectares, is enchanting. Created and landscaped a few decades ago, this initially wild environment crossed by streams is now a discovery trail of numerous varieties of flowers, where perennials and love-in-a-mist nigellas mingle with the many varieties of roses. The walk continues along the edge of the pond towards a centuries-old oak tree inviting the stroller to have a break under his majestic branches. The traditional order of the French garden meets the fantasy of the English garden, with its floral and shrubby arabesques.
Our opinion
Heritage and nature form a harmonious picture here, with old sun-warmed stones delicately framed by wisteria. The manor house has survived the centuries without losing any of its character or elegance. Today it is a building with an old-fashioned charm, the interior could benefit from some modernisation. The property remains authentic and full of character, thanks to the many original features that have been well maintained by the current owners. They have turned the garden into the prime asset of the estate, a work of patience and a vision of great poetry.
