Soissons is in a central location: by car, Paris is 75 minutes away, Charles-de-Gaulle airport is 50 minutes away, Lille 2 hours away and Brussels 2½ hours away. Soissons SNCF train station provides 70-minute links to Paris.


This mansion house stands in Soissons town centre, in a quiet street, lined with large houses dating from the Roaring Twenties and reflecting an Anglo-Norman or neo-classical style. All the shops are within walking distance as is the large covered market in the town centre. Theatres and cinemas are also nearby. The central position of this property means that its residents can take full advantage of the town’s leisure activities. The property is reached from the street via a low wall topped with black wrought iron railings, featuring basket-handle arches and scrolls, typical of the reconstruction era. Once through the gate, visitors face the facade with its majestic, central, 3-storey tower, topped with a steep, slate roof.

The mansion house

The facades are characteristic of the style of middle-class houses in the 1920’s, with full use made of materials and their colours: the red of the brick, the ivory of the stone, the green of the glazed friezes, the white of the central column and the grey of the slate. The walls and lower sections of this manor house, constructed in 1923, are made of local and flat stone as well as rusticated masonry. The influence of Art Nouveau can be seen despite the Art Deco period just beginning: no symmetry, contrasting volumes with a turret built into the carcass of the main house and many imaginative features: an open loggia with a semi-circular arch, a balcony with a balustrade, a bull’s eye window, a covered porch, a Jacobin-style roof dormer, a keystone with a floral motif and two ceramic flowers adorning the wall. The roof is equally imaginative, with a hip roof consolidated by straight jambs on the projection and another roof, sloping in completely the opposite direction. And lastly, a spire, giving the building all its style, is topped with a zinc finial, symbol of the link between the sky and the land. This building is both impressive and picturesque.

Ground floor
The main entrance hall is illuminated with light courtesy of the completely glazed door, enhanced with ironwork finely wrought into scrolls. The motif is a plant fresco featuring a central, highly stylised fleur-de-lis. The hall stands out because of its coloured mosaic tiled floor, with a lateral frieze and a central geometric design that matches the scrolls on the door. Said hall provides access, left, to a lounge and a dining room. This room has the benefit of through light which is reflected in the polished strip pattern parquet flooring. The atmosphere owes much to the period decorative features: solid moulding, two white, veined marble fireplaces and a basket-handle arch separating the two living areas. A study, on the right-hand side of the hall, looks out over the street. It is followed by a large, particularly bright reception room, with a French window and three windows, two of which face south. The decoration, with its moulding and its door surround, is reminiscent of the Troubadour style, not at all in keeping with the construction period. A kitchen completes this level with access to the garden via a glazed door, opening on to a porch, protected by an awning. It is bright and has access to the cellar.
First floor
A landing room at the top of an oak wood stairway, with wonderful, cast iron railings, topped with a wooden handrail, provides access to three bedrooms, with parquet flooring and ceiling moulding, some have a marble fireplace. A dressing room and two bathrooms complete this level. The main bedroom is extended by a balcony, with a view of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes Abbey.
Second floor
A small landing gives access to three bedrooms, with partially sloping ceilings, one of which has a bathroom. This level also includes an attic. All the floors are covered with period, strip pattern parquet flooring.

The garage

A vast car garage can be directly accessed via the street. It is topped with an attic under the rafters.

The garden

An attractive garden, surrounding the building, includes a back lawn. At the end, between two pine trees, is masonry terrace, forming an eating area able to take a table and chairs.

Our opinion

Soissons is above all renowned for Clovis and the story of the vase, few towns can boast 2,000 years of history. Nowadays, it is a very commercial, dynamic town in the protective shade of its 12th century Gothic cathedral. Also, nearby are two immense forests, that of Retz and that of Compiègne, both former hunting grounds of the French kings and now havens for hikers and horse-riders.
This mansion house exudes an elegance typical of the reconstruction era that followed the First World War, especially its road side facade which stands out courtesy of its beautiful, imaginative features. This property is set in the midst of Soissons in a peace and quiet that is unusual for a town. And yet, the cathedral is but 8 minutes’ walk away. So near and so far from Paris that it comprises both the attractions of the town and the countryside. A superb home for a family seeking a quality of life that is impossible to find at this price in Paris.
