Description

This house and its garage, adjoining neighbouring properties on either side, are in a residential district on the tramline. The street facade of the house, with its white walls and its black-framed openings, still reflects its 1960’s style. However, the rear facade of the house now exudes a very contemporary air due to the addition of an extension, with a zinc roof. It looks out over a patio, enhanced with trees and flowers. Said south-east facing patio is surrounded by high shale quarry block walls.

The house

Renovated in 2013 in a contemporary style by an architect, this house spans three levels, one of which is under the rafters. The roof is covered with slate and zinc.


Ground floor
The entrance, on one side of the 2-car garage with a tiled floor, opens into a hall area which provides access to a stairway and a study area. At the end of the garage are a laundry room and a second stairway leading to a kitchen.
First floor
The open wooden stairway goes up to a vast lounge with an eating area, enhanced by a wood-burning stove. A workshop-style atrium separates it from a study. The floors on this level are covered with blond-oak-wood-coloured parquet flooring and grey sandstone tiles. In the lounge, the shale has been left exposed on one long wall. The others are painted white. A door opens on to a terrace. A few steps at the end of the lounge lead to the fully fitted kitchen. The latter opens directly on to the patio. A hall area gives access to a toilet and a stairway going to the garage and laundry room.
Second floor
The stairway continues up to the main bedroom, with a view over the patio, a dressing room and a bathroom. A second stairway also goes up from the lounge to another three bedrooms. Identical in size, they share a bathroom and separate toilet. One of the bedrooms looks out over the terrace, the other two have a view of the street. One of them still has an exposed shale stone wall, just like the bathroom.
Third floor
Under the rafters and illuminated via skylights, this level comprises one vast room.

The patio

The patio, planted with trees and flowers, is completely unoverlooked and surrounded by high slate-shale walls. It is in the sun for a large part of the day.

Our opinion

Light and space, not to mention comfort, are what was most certainly asked of the architect responsible for the renovation works. Despite the difficulty in combining all of these elements in a townhouse, the specifications were met and the result is in line with all expectations. Although Angers does not have the same problems as large towns, the fact of having a car parking space at home is still a luxury and being able to enjoy an outside area, a privilege, especially right in the centre of town.
