This property stands in a bustling oyster farming village, typical of the Atlantic Coast, with all shops: 20 minutes from Rochefort; 25 from Royan and just a few minutes from Ile-d'Oléron. This area in the French department of Charente-Maritime has a particularly sunny seaside climate. Coubre Forest is also close by.
Description
This property, in the midst of a village, takes up the north part of a small area delimited by three streets. The mansion house stands on one of the two street corners; a little house, followed by outbuildings set at right angles, stands on the other. Both houses are connected by a high wall featuring two openings. The facade of the main U-shaped, 2-storey building, constructed from dressed stone, has French Historic Monument Listing. Said building is extended by a rear wing on the garden side. The two sections set at right angles to the street are closed by a wall, topped with a balustrade intersected by the arch of the entablature above the entrance gateway. The main entrance door, the fanlight of which is enhanced with wrought ironwork, is predominantly moulded and flanked by flat pilasters, topped with a protruding moulded architrave, the latter crowning the entrance.
The mansion house
This mansion house is entered on the courtyard side via a door, the arching of which forms protruding moulding supporting a balcony, featuring ironwork railings. A semi-circular arched French window under a flat cornice opens on to this projection.
The other windows, surrounded by dual aspect moulding, are topped with a drop arch lintel, the curved cornices of which intersect the straight facade string courses. Another string course also links the window sills.
Ground floor
The vestibule, with its central, suspended, monumental stairway, over a half-barrel vault, is a work of art in itself. The stereotomy work carried out here is quite outstanding, worthy of one of Jules-Hardouin-Mansart’s disciples. It provides access to a large lounge, with its fireplace set in the corner of the room; at the back, a smaller room in use as a study, where the fireplace has also been preserved. A large room, with its fireplace and its period panelling, is in use as a dining room which provides access, on one side, to a storage room and, on the other, to a corridor linking the main stairway to the garden and leading to a small dining room. Next is the kitchen, with its flat stone floor, its fireplace, typical of the region and its back stairway going upstairs.
First floor
The back stairway goes up from the ground floor kitchen to a first large bedroom, with a window overlooking the garden. A corridor leads to two smaller bedrooms on the garden side, followed by a spacious fourth bedroom, overlooking the street, which has its own adjoining bathroom. The central landing passageway leads from there to a large bedroom with a fireplace and, lastly, to another small bedroom.
The small house
This fully renovated house stands on the corner of two streets. Its south-facing interior facade was constructed from red brick and dressed stone (for the window surrounds) in order to match the toilet outhouse under a pavilion roof adjoining the main building. This house, all on one level, has its own entrance on the road side.

In addition to its architectural quality both inside and out, this residence is in a wonderful location: set in the peace and quiet of a village by the seaside and also in the country. The property’s elegance, exuded, for instance, by its vestibule and its stairway railings, marks the profound link that unites provincial life and refinement, that which is often wrongly associated with urban hustle and bustle, that of the French capital. Without unnecessary pretention or ostentation, its simplicity and all necessary features make it practical and aesthetic. How can potential buyers resist an equilibrium that is still so perfect today?
