A 70 m² flat in an 18th century mansion house,
with a cellar and a terrace, in Burgundy's Beaune
Beaune, COTE-D'OR burgundy 21200 FR

Set in the historic centre of Beaune, this flat is 10 minutes from slip roads for the A6 motorway, a crossroads providing links to Paris or Geneva in 2½ hours and Lyon airport in 1½ hours. The train station is just a 10-minute walk, as are numerous food shops, markets, restaurants and hotels. Beaune aerodrome, a 15-minute drive away, is open to civil aircraft. The town, in the heart of the “Climates of Burgundy” (Burgundy vineyards), classified on the UNESCO World Heritage List, acts as the Burgundy wine capital. Its world renown is also based on the wine auction held by the Hospices every third Sunday in November.

The street facades represent a succession of buildings, the walls of which are interspersed with carriage gates and discreet entrance doors. A large gateway, on the south side, opens into a first, rectangular, paved, main courtyard that leads via a corridor to a second interior courtyard. The facades are enhanced with flower beds with a central square of medicinal herbs and plants, surrounded by boxwood. A small private terrace is delimited by planters, filled with rose bushes, and provides direct access to this ground-floor flat.

The flat

This flat can be reached all on a level from the interior courtyard and its private terrace, accessed via a flight of three steps or a ramp bordered by a flower-filled planter. The pink rendered facade, with a floated finish, features sky blue door and window frames. A glazed entrance door opens directly into a south-facing kitchen-living room. Two tall windows look out over the street, giving an unobstructed view. The double coffered, moulded ceiling is delicately adorned with a few roses, bearing witness to the building’s devotion to Mary. A large wall cupboard, a pink marble fireplace sculpted with acanthus leaves. Above, a trumeau mirror, flanked by two thin pilasters, reflects a wall cupboard with delicate moulding. Oak wood parquet flooring. The fully fitted, open-plan kitchen area is sober and functional. Travertine floor tiles. A door, on the kitchen side, leads to a shower room and toilet, with an opaque-glass window, looking out on to the interior courtyard and the terrace. Travertine wall and floor tiles as well as a single vanity unit, with a mirror. A wooden stairway goes up to a little mezzanine, with parquet flooring, suitable as a study or a spare bedroom. The entrance hall provides access to a bedroom, with a wardrobe. Parquet flooring and a large, triple-leaf window set in an arch, on the courtyard side. An adjoining shower room and toilet, with a vanity unit, a mirror as well as travertine wall and floor tiles.
