A townhouse with its garden
in one of the most beautiful districts of Tours
Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR

Famous for its chateaux and its royal residences in Amboise and Chenonceaux, the Touraine region has also cultivated its image as the “Garden of France” since the “Ancien Régime” (Old Order). This townhouse stands in a central position in the town of Tours, the region’s main urban area. Near to all shops and amenities, it is also but a few minutes’ walk from the TGV train station, with its 55-minute links to Paris. The A10 motorway is 10 minutes away.

Bordering a long, wooded boulevard, this townhouse, spanning a surface area of approx. 310 m², is flanked by dissimilar neighbours. Constructed from freestone, the dressed stone of its facade is decorated. Offset carriage gates open off the street into a porchway. A set of double French windows, with stained-glass featuring geometrical motifs, opens on to the garden. A few steps go up to the townhouse.

The townhouse typical of the local area

With a silhouette emblematic of one of the most beautiful districts of Tours, this townhouse is constructed from freestone and topped with a slate roof. The facade comprises two bays. The levels are separated by stone string courses. The windows on the ground and first floors are topped with triangular pediments, decorated with scrolls, enhanced with foliage and flowers. Wrought iron railings protect the large windows on the first floor. The hip, slate roof features a dormer, with an arched freestone pediment, and two bull’s eye windows.

Ground floor
The carriage gates open off the street into porchway, where the floor is laid with painted paving stones. A set of double French windows, with stained-glass featuring geometrical motifs, makes it possible to access the garden and, by going up a few stone steps, the townhouse. The hall, housing an oak wood stairway, gives access to a lounge opening on to the south-facing garden, a dining room and a contemporary kitchen. Floors are covered with oak wood parquet flooring, laid in strip or herringbone patterns. Ceilings are decorated with cornices. The spacious rooms are widely illuminated by tall windows. The lounge is embellished with a white marble fireplace, with a richly sculpted mantel. A pantry and a toilet complete this level.
First floor
The decorative features are outstanding: strip pattern, solid oak wood parquet flooring, ceilings decorated with cornices and marble fireplaces. The floor is taken up by four large bedrooms, reached via a wide landing and intercommunicating via two shower rooms and toilets, as well as two comfortable dressing rooms.
Second floor
This level, laid with strip pattern parquet flooring throughout, comprises a large bedroom which, overlooking the boulevard, also includes an area with a wash-hand basin. On the garden side are two bedrooms, a large contemporary bathroom and a separate toilet.
Reached from both the inside of the townhouse and from the porchway, the basement is composed of a linen room, a boiler room and two superb vaulted cellars.

The garden

Spanning a surface area of approx. 280 m², this south-facing garden is completely enclosed by walls. Immaculately kept, it is predominantly covered with grass and planted with ginkgo-biloba, oak, lime and magnolia trees. A central pond is covered with waterlilies and flowerbeds enhance throughout. Along the south facade of the house, a wooden terrace, shaded by an impressive wisteria, gives access to the lounge. A paved driveway leads from the porchway to an outbuilding standing at the end of the garden.

The outbuilding

This building, facing the townhouse from the end of the garden, is no other than the property’s old stable. Constructed from quarry block stone as well as freestone and topped with slate, it spans a surface area of approx. 180 m² over two levels. Once a house, it is now used as a workshop, a games room and a storage room.

Our opinion

The pleasant way of life existing in the area around Tours is illustrated in this townhouse’s elegant freestone and slate facade. An emblematic building of this great town in the Loire Valley, it has an outstanding architectural silhouette, blending soberness with harmony. The inside is bright as well as welcoming and has vast rooms, with spacious floor surface areas and high ceilings. Period decorative features bestow character to the property, from the oak wood parquet flooring to the moulded ceilings. Everything is an invitation to enjoy a family way of life or a provincial holiday home, enhanced by its pleasant garden and its terrace, steeped in the fragrance of wisteria.
