Near to the village of Bourg, this old, vine-growing chateau is some 10 km from the A10 motorway. Bordeaux is a 40-minute drive away and less than 15 minutes by train. Paris takes 2½ hours from Bordeaux’s Saint-Jean train station. Not far from the property is a prehistoric cave, featuring some of the most outstanding rock drawings in the world. One of the widest sections of the river, but a few minutes away, borders the surprising fortified village of Bourg-sur-Gironde. Shops, schools and doctors are less than 4 km away.


This lush estate is set in the midst of a greenbelt area. Vineyards, adjoining the house, stretch for as far as the eye can see. This property, amidst the vineyards, extends over 15,000 m². It comprises three buildings: a 640 m², traditional, Chartreuse house, a caretaker’s cottage and outbuildings. All stand at a distance from a nearby hamlet. The estate is reached via a little country lane that winds its way through the vines. A gateway, set behind the traditional Chartreuse house, opens on to the property. A wide courtyard is used as a parking area for several cars. The building looks out over immense parklands, with a lake at one end.

The large, luxurious home

This house comprises a south-facing main building, with a west-facing wing set at right angles. The main building dates back to the 17th century; a Baroque-style tower was added in the 19th century, followed by a few conversion works at the end of the 20th century in order to provide it with modern-day home comforts. Both sections have numerous entrances. A contemporary balcony has been added to the courtyard side to provide direct access to the lounges without having to pass through the living room. A large number of openings on the parkland side look out over the natural surroundings.

Ground floor
A dining room, spanning approx. 30 m² and featuring an immense arched picture window, was added to the south side some 20 years ago. In front extends a terrace spanning approx. 35 m². At the rear, a large fully fitted kitchen has a large stone fireplace and exposed ceiling beams. It is extended by a storeroom and a wine cellar spanning approx. 43 m². The living room also houses a wooden stairway leading upstairs.
First floor
A vast room under the roofing framework looks out over the parklands, whilst a study has a view of the vines. They are followed by two adjoining lounges with direct access to a stone porch and a view over the bower in the parklands. The bigger of the two lounges has oak wood parquet flooring. Its walls are lined with pale grey and green painted-panelling and it is further enhanced with a fireplace, the wooden mantel of which reflects the Louis XV style. The small lounge has watered silk wallpaper. A white marble fireplace is topped with a 19th century trumeau. The other lounge features wood and brick. The upstairs corridor is extended by a few steps leading to a corridor that provides access to four large bedrooms in the west wing. The first is laid out on a lower level, by the lounges, with direct access to the terrace. It includes its own toilet. The three other bedrooms are reached via a corridor. Two toilets and two shower rooms are set out on the landing.
Second floor
A wooden, winding stairway leads up to this level laid out in the tower. The stairwell is lined with floral wallpaper. This level comprises two bedrooms. One has its own bathroom and an open fireplace; the other, smaller bedroom has an adjoining shower room. The toilet is on the landing.
The west wing originally housed the chateau’s wine storehouses. One section has been renovated; another section can be converted to suit the new owners’ needs and projects.
This section comprises the old concrete vats. An area, spanning approx. 60 m², has been partially modified in the aim of creating a future function or projection room. This wing also includes a kitchen, initially intended for preparing meals for those working on the vineyard. A fully glazed room is currently used as a garage but could easily become a conservatory.

The caretaker’s cottage

A caretaker’s cottage, spanning approx. 85 m², has its own independent entrance. Standing at a distance from the west wing, it comprises a large kitchen, a living room with a stone fireplace, a bedroom, a storeroom, a bathroom and a toilet. It is in an excellent state of repair.

The outbuildings

In the courtyard, near to the main entrance, stands a farm shed, spanning approx. 300 m², able to accommodate six vehicles or a boat. Adjoining it is a self-contained studio flat, with a veranda forming the entrance hall, a shower room and toilet as well as a living room, spanning approx. 15 m², with a concrete floor. A narrow stairway goes up to a cosy mezzanine able to take two beds.

The parklands

The parklands extend over more than a hectare. They comprise a bower, a one-hundred-year-old bamboo grove, a lake as well as a fountain and a wash-house, both renovated and well-maintained.
The grounds could easily include a swimming pool, in which case the dovecote could be used as a pool-house. The ever-flowing fountain dating from the Middle-Ages in the centre of the parklands indicates that this place, named after said fountain, has been inhabited since ancient times.

Our opinion

The abundance and serenity of the landscapes in the Gironde estuary make this property a place that exudes its own, strong character which new owners with open heats will harmoniously acquiesce. Reflecting a similar image, the immense building is extremely easy to move around.
The original property included 7 ha of vineyards. It would be possible to envisage purchasing nearby plots of vines in order to breathe new life into a vine-growing property which has produced excellent wines for decades.
The estate is immaculately kept by its current owner who has always lavished it with care and is now meticulously preparing it for its successor.
