In a village on the Aude coast, halfway between Narbonne and Perpignan, the location is bordered by 16 km of Mediterranean beaches, with the Corbières massif as a backdrop. A former island that has become an authentic peninsula, a guardian of traditions, a concentrate of the Languedoc. The house is located in a characteristic Mediterranean village, between the sea and the lake. Perched above it since the 16th century lie the remains of a castle which once marked the border of the French kingdom. The diverse and wild landscapes have all kept their authenticity. Here, the environment is protected. 30 km south of Narbonne via the A9 motorway. The TGV serves the stations of Narbonne and Perpignan; the regional train stops at the village station. Four easily accessible airports: Perpignan: 34 km in 25 min / Carcassonne: 95 km in 60 min / Montpellier: 132 km in 1h20 / Girona: 142 km in 1h20.


The house, which covers a surface area of about 250 m², is built on three levels, its south-east exposure allows the natural light to fill the interior space. The building dates back to the 17th century and is accessed through two entrances on two different levels. The main entrance at the front gives direct access from the quiet, pedestrianised village square, with its succession of cafés and restaurants.The second, via a back alley, opens on to a flight of steps leading to the dining room.The property is located in the heart of this fishing and winegrowing village and is close to the shops, on the square where the local market is regularly held. The facade is pierced by six straight windows with wooden shutters overlooking the square. An ornamental plant climbs half way up the front of the house. At the back, a French window, three normal windows and two oeuil-de-boeuf windows embellish the ochre-coloured walls. The roof is covered with monk and nun tiles.

The house

The house is certainly the result of the connection of two buildings, one of which was a 17th century winegrower's house, and has recently been completely renovated. The renovation was entirely carried out using existing or added period materials (terracotta or cement tile floors, whitewashed walls, recent double-glazed windows, oak beams, etc.). Repainted “a fresco”, the winegrower’s house resembles a "palazzo". The colour palette is inspired by the freshness of Florentine villas. Five harmonious and intimate rooms, some of which are air-conditioned, and a studio are distributed over the floors. In the most carefully decorated rooms, furniture dating back to the 18th century alternates harmoniously with creations by famous designers (Pierre Paulin, Eames, Bertoia, Saarinen, Ron Arad, Starck). The recent renovation of the private shower rooms has been carried out in the same way, using noble materials.

Ground floor
The main entrance is from the village square. As soon as you walk through the door, a clever mix of styles sets the tone. The kinetic cement tile mosaic matches a Louis XVI sofa. A white marble Napoleon III fireplace has been placed in a reading room. The hallway opens onto a corridor with storage units on the walls. This doorway leads to the dining room featuring pure lines without renouncing the fantasy embodied by the ornamental elements. A few whitewashed steps lead down to the street at the back. In the kitchen there is a break in style: octagonal terracotta tiles succeed the matt black floor. The kitchen is furnished with quality period elements. The current occupants have opted for a traditional and authentic spirit, using the memory of original craft elements (tiles, reclaimed doors). The antique sink was carved from black marble stone, quarried locally. A curved plaster hood characteristic of the region tops a cast iron cooker, another homage to the Languedoc region. A laundry room is hidden behind a door decorated with a heart. From the hallway, an enclosed granite staircase leads to the upper floors. A toilet has been installed under the stairs.
First floor
The first-floor landing serves four bedrooms, two facing the rear street and two facing the square. Each room is partly air-conditioned and has been decorated in a unique way: antique and second-hand furniture is combined with many contemporary elements from the last few decades. In one bedroom, the red and white cement tiles have been preserved. All the old wooden doors have been painted in washed grey-blue tones. Some of the bathrooms have retained their old-fashioned character, while others have been renovated to exalt their purity. All bedrooms have their own bathroom with toilet.
Second floor
The landing serves two bedrooms, a private flat and a laundry room. The mixture of styles and antique objects that characterise the house is again to be found here: old floor tiles, woodwork. An 18th century double door, painted grey, opens into one of the bedrooms. The bathrooms combine contemporary lines and accessories set against a background of lime paint. In the private flat, designed in a loft spirit, there is a large space with a kitchen area on one side and a sanitary area with a shower and toilet on the other, closed off by sliding doors. The high ceilings have made it possible to integrate a mezzanine open to either side where the sleeping area is accessible by a loft ladder. Two large windows overlooking the square and four roof windows illuminate the volumes of this room. Whitewashed walls, beams and mezzanine floor treated in white set the tone. The same light tones have been used for the waxed concrete floor.

Our opinion

Nestled at the foot of the Canigou, between land and sea, the blue curve drawn by the nearby pond is one of those places that inspire and offer a change of scenery. A huge and timeless breath of sea air in a dream setting: three hundred days of sunshine a year, 16 km of fine sandy beaches, sublime landscapes, in the heart of an ancient and colourful village with the Corbières in the background. Entirely renovated, the house invites you and/or passing guests to drop off your luggage right now, as the configuration of the property allows for various uses. Everything has been restored and decorated with great care, and the original spirit remains intact: each room invites you to a gentle stroll tinged with fantasy, with the strains of the bustle of the ancient village creating a harmonic background.
