This property, where the boundaries of the French departments of Orne and Calvados meet, stands in a village in one of Normandy’s most picturesque regions. A large town, with all useful infrastructures, sixth form colleges and a train station, is 25 minutes away. The train provides 190-minute links to Paris. A village, with all local shops, is 2 km away.


This house, on the outskirts of the village, extends lengthwise alongside a little road. It is flanked by an extension set at right angles. Between the two buildings, the facade features a carriage entrance that provides access to an inner paved courtyard. It is separated from the garden by a low, wooden wall. Spanning a surface area of approx. 4,500 m², it is enclosed by walls. A second gateway at the end of the country house opens on to the main road.

The country house

This house, constructed from sandstone quarry blocks, spans two levels, topped with a flat tile, gable roof with a hipped end. A pruned Virginia creeper climbs along the facade. Both facades feature numerous openings that let in copious amounts of through light.

Ground floor
The entrance door opens off the courtyard into a vestibule. It provides access, on one side, to a dining room and to an adjoining lounge and study. On the other side, a door leads to a small vestibule and a wooden stairway going up to an area, spanning approx. 60 m² and awaiting conversion. Opposite the entrance, an opening leads to the kitchen. The walls in the dining room are painted a warm colour, whilst the beams and joists have been left exposed as in the lounge, where a quarry stone block fireplace features a dressed stone lintel, supported on granite corbels. The wooden stairway, the newel post of which is carved with a head, goes up to the floor given over to the night-time section. The atmosphere is more refined in the study where the walls and their wainscoting are light in colour. The ceiling features long coffers, adorned with cornices and moulding. A white, veined marble fireplace supports a trumeau mirror. The floor is laid with herringbone pattern parquet flooring. The utility space taken up by a boiler room and a laundry room can be reached from the outside.
First floor
A vast landing provides access to five bedrooms, each with its own bath or shower room and dressing room or shower room and toilet. The meticulous decoration is sober. A linen room and a separate toilet complete this level.
An extension, constructed at right angles to the country house, is separated from it by a passageway. An underground wine cellar, spanning a surface area of approx. 50 m² and featuring a 4 m high ceiling, still houses various sizes of oak wood barrels and casks. The access door is in the courtyard. An opening in the passageway provides access to a room, spanning a surface area of approx. 45 m², which awaits conversion. One of the five bedrooms in the country house has been laid out on the second level of this extension.

The garden

The garden is in a raised position and the view of the house is unobstructed. Tall trees, including sequoia and ash, are dotted throughout the lawns. A pathway winds as far as a bench set under a vast branch. An old, granite, apple press, a quarry stone block aviary with a thatched roof and a “lovers” fountain all help to enhance the garden.

Our opinion

Just a few kilometres away, the Rock of Oëtre and its magnificent panoramic view form an unusual and unexpected site, one of the most prestigious in Normandy. It is a mountain amidst bocage countryside. There are numerous hiking trails. The river Orne which has hollowed Europe’s oldest mountain, flows as far as Clécy, a site renowned for paragliding. Out of sight of onlookers and facing west, this country house is reminiscent of coaching inns where rest was in tune with stopover times. The outstanding trees in the garden are there to keep watch. Its two areas, respectively spanning approx. 60 and 45 m², offer extension potential, in a bocage countryside that is still rural and authentic.
