interior designer Tristan Auer and nestled on an inner court on Île Saint-Louis island, Paris
Paris, PARIS paris 75004 FR

Location

Île Saint-Louis island is one of the two natural isles in the heart of the French capital on the River Seine. The island’s atmosphere is calm and picturesque with old alleys, 17th-century townhouses and elegant facades. Six bridges link this river isle to the neighbouring districts of Paris. The isle is a discreet haven, set aside from the city’s urban bustle. The quays that run around the isle are perfect spots for strolls along the River Seine with unrivalled views of historical Parisian monuments, including Notre-Dame Cathedral and Paris City Hall. This residential isle is a secret symbol of refinement and tranquillity in the centre of Paris. It draws both visitors looking for authenticity and Parisians seeking to escape urban bustle.

Description

This open-plan apartment lies at the end of the inner court of a 17th-century edifice. It is nestled in the calmest area of Île Saint-Louis island. There is an on-site caretaker. When you step through the entrance door, you are first struck by the spaciousness of the property. Reception spaces with a combined floor area of 133m² extend with a resolutely modernist interior design and a floor of polished concrete. Straight on the left, there is a large lounge. Bookshelves are built into the wall all the way along it. Beneath this shelving there are cupboards with sliding wooden doors. The natural light of the inner court floods into the apartment through a wall of translucent glazing. A broad, open-sided passageway runs alongside the lounge and takes you to a 44m² space beneath a glass roof. This space was once used for production. Today, it could serve as a splendid living room. Beyond the lounge, there is a dining area. Here, a long table can be used to host dinner parties with many guests. And beyond the dining area, on the right, there is a cosy television lounge where you can enjoy privacy behind a light-blocking curtain. There is a guest lavatory and then a kitchen, which is bathed in natural light from a skylight. The kitchen furniture units come from the premium kitchen manufacturer Bulthaup and the appliances come from the high-end appliances manufacturer Gaggenau. The work surfaces are made of stainless steel, as are the handles and backsplash panels. There are large storage spaces in the dining area. Plain wooden doors with thin bands of stainless steel close these cupboards. The two bedrooms on this level lie on either side of the entrance hall. Their doors and door frames are made of wood. Each bedroom has storage spaces and headboards made of the same warm material and a bathroom with a lavatory. The washbasins are made of Corian and supported with thin wooden posts. You reach the basement via a stone staircase. At the bottom of these stairs there is a corridor on the right, behind a door, then a hallway. On one side of this hallway, there is a series of storage spaces and wardrobes. On the other side of it, there is a bathroom with a lavatory. Straight ahead, three steps carved out of a tree trunk lead down to a vaulted stone bedroom. At the end of the corridor there is a large utility room. Opposite the door that leads to the bedroom down here, there is a technical installations room that includes a gas boiler, a hot-water tank and the motor of the home’s central vacuum cleaning system. The ground floor has underfloor heating. All the floors are made of polished concrete and the windows are double-glazed. The light switches are from the high-end electrical equipment manufacturer Meljac. Each room is connected to a central vacuum cleaning system. The apartment is fitted with air conditioning.

Our opinion

This open-plan city apartment, signed by the famous interior designer Tristan Auer, is a modernist masterpiece. Its minimalism is so striking that it could make you forget its high standards of aesthetic appeal, underlined by a selection of noble materials, and the remarkable degree of technical expertise that was needed to produce this unique gem. The property would suit aesthetes with a family or an artist keen to have their own studio at home. It would equally delight any lover of open-plan spaces who would like to host friendly gatherings here.
