"The Happy Valley". When he bought Château Haute Roche, could diplomat Claude Achille Clarac have been inspired by the work of his then missing wife? It is tempting to believe so considering the striking beauty of the Loire Valley that unfolds before your eyes here. Behind a medieval facade, reminiscent of a nineteenth century infatuation with the past that it has skilfully reinvented, this chateau is home to the dreams of all those who succeeded one another here. Wide windows, light colours, modern paintings, Scandinavian furniture and exotic objects maintain, in an atmosphere is both lively and serene, the spirit of travel that has been passed down from owner to owner all the way up to the present. It is a joy to let it carry you away.
I arrived in Nantes twenty-five years ago, and quickly fell in love with the Loire Valley for its history, beauty and light. We visited the chateau Haute Roche and found exactly what he had spent a long time searching for - a view of the valley that we could never tire of that stretches all the way to the estuary and the city of Nantes thirty kilometres away.
With an original troubadour style, the Château Haute Roche and its three turrets overlook the Loire Valley and offer a unique 180° panorama. The chateau was bought by Claude Achille Clarac in 1947, he expanded the building with an extension to the east and built a terrace. A great lover of art, history, literature and nature, he created a garden which has long been classified as an "exceptional garden" of rock filled with a large variety of listed plants. We strive everyday to restore its former splendour.
The construction of the chateau dates back to 1847. It was bought a hundred years later by Claude Achille Clarac, Ambassador of France and husband of the photographer, journalist and writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach. The place is marked by his numerous trips abroad and the many personalities who have stayed there. When he died in 1999, his son took over the property. We bought it in 2017 and turned it into a guest house in 2018.
We were inspired by our experiences abroad and now share them with our guests. Moreover, no one can escape their heritage so there are some undeniable Scandinavian influences. We wanted to combine modern day comforts with the property's old soul, an alliance of tradition and innovation. With the gates shutting out the rest of the world, guests experience a unique stay in a natural setting that lends itself to day-dreaming and contemplation. The panoramic view from the terrace or from the rooms (all of which are south-facing) is exceptional. We have a table d'hôtes for dinner. The cuisine is simple and tasty, prepared with carefully selected products from local producers and from our garden. Our cuisine is inspired by modern Scandinavian cuisine and our travels around the world, but we always stay true to the basics of traditional French cuisine.
Our property and a twenty-three hectare field nearby are perfect for walks. We advise our guests to take the time to stroll or cycle along the river Hâvre, then over to Oudon and Ancenis which are towns nearby. A stop on the promontory Champtoceaux captures all the magic of the Loire. We also recommend visiting the abbey of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil and tasting our neighbours' wines at Domaine des Génaudières or the Domaine des Galloires. Finally, Villa Saint-Germain, one of the best restaurants in the area, is only two kilometres away.
