As city dwellers in search of another life, we were finally in tune with our aspirations and packed our bags to settle in a small village in Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy. We chose to make a change that allowed us to break with a frantic pace of life and open ourselves up to new perspectives. The Burgundy region has an ideal climate. Each season is unique, bringing an abundance of nature and vines which flourish on the doorsteps of the authentic houses built in golden stone. Montagny-les-Buxy, a village of two hundred and fifty inhabitants, offers a calm and gentle way of life. It is also located just 40 minutes from Beaune, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Gare de Lyon in Paris.
On our first visit to this house, which was divided in two at the time, it had not benefited from any embellishments or beautification for over forty years. I am an interior designer and could immediately see its potential. The two houses have now been adjoined and their rustic spirit has been preserved through the preservation of the original materials in particular. Our first source of inspiration was the golden rock of Buxy, the same stone that covers the facade of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and forms the foundations of the house. It is an Aalenian crinoidal limestone pigmented by iron oxides. The crinoidal aspect comes from fragments of crinoids and creates facets that reflect the light.
The property was originally two winegrower's houses dating from the 17th century that were modified over time. After eighteen months of extensive renovations, the guesthouse opened in March 2021.
The location of the house offers a sense of calm and softness. It is a real opportunity to disconnect. The view is completely unobstructed and showcases stunning natural scenery that changes with the seasons. The vines stretch for as far as the eye can see. Some mornings at sunrise, Mont Blanc stands out like a paper cut-out against a coloured background. We have decorated the property with soft colours, handcrafted items and designer furniture to create a cosy and warm interior. There are also a number antiques and items on display that we have brought back from Asia. The Montagny lounge, reserved for guests, benefits from an independent configuration with direct access from the outside. Homemade pastries and drinks can be enjoyed freely in the afternoon. Guests can also warm up in front of the fireplace in the evenings from September to March.
There are many chateaus that are worth a visit. That of Pontus de Tyard attracts attention with its Renaissance garden and conservatory orchard featuring twenty varieties of fruit trees from the 16th century. Also worth a visit is the Faïencerie de Charolles, classified as living heritage, and its shop where fifteen artisans bring pieces drawn by contemporary designers to life. Take the greenway, located three kilometres away, from Buxy to Cluny by bike and enjoy the varied landscapes. The Atelier Perrusson in Varennes-Le-Grand is one for those who like to hunt out unique antiques. The father and son cabinetmakers and antique dealers passionately restore old pieces and know how to find a rare one on demand.
The house has two suites. With a surface area of 28m² and a clear view of the vineyards, the Mont Blanc suite has a queen size bed, a bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a separate toilet. The Roche Dorée suite, with a surface area of 26m², has an independent entrance, a queen size bed, and a bathroom with a walk-in shower, bath and toilet.
