The narrow streets of the Mouffetard district weave the memories of a popular and commercial Paris. This narrow house, nestled between its neighbours, is discreet and remains hidden until you step through the door. The interior harmoniously combines the spirit of a country house with more contemporary, British touches. It is an ideal location for strolling through the Mouff market, dancing at the Sunday ball to the sound of the accordion and retreating, when the time comes, to a cosy atmosphere between greenhouse and garden.
I found this place by chance twenty years ago. I bought two floors to begin with. The others were being rented at the time and I bought them a few years later. I moved from the 20th arrondissement of Paris, which I liked very much, but the 5th suddenly seemed like a provincial town. I was raising my three children alone and coming here was a godsend. I am an antique dealer and interior designer and I could not have found a more inspiring house. Everything was already filled with magic: the parquet floor, the floor tiles, all the rooms with en suites and the small garden.
The house was built in the early 18th century and then altered in the 19th. It is spread over three floors, served by a spiral staircase and has both tiled and wooden floors. The exterior walls are coated and all the windows have old shutters. I created a greenhouse, which enlarged the main living area. I found railway flooring to make the most of the entrance.
A true hidden gem in the heart of the Latin Quarter - you would never imagine that a four storey house of 200m2 lies behind such a narrow facade. Thanks to the location, this building, typical of the neighborhood, escaped the same Haussmannian destruction as its neighbours, Monge and Claude Bernard. At the back of the house is a neighbouring tropical garden filled with fragrant roses; cool and calm summer evenings transport us to the city's waters.
We offer a haven of peace with a garden in the heart of the Latin Quarter which is home to the grandes écoles, the Jardin des Plantes, the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Pantheon, the Grand Mosque and just moments from the Seine. Our breakfasts are a real treat. In fine weather, they are served in a peaceful setting away from the bustle of the city and in the shade of the large trees in the adjacent gardens of painters Chapelin-Midi and César. An incredible provincial house in Paris!
Rue Mouffetard, a renowned shopping street, is the perfect spot for tasting and buying a range of French and foreign products. We particularly like the “Mavromatis” bistro, a Greek tavern that values the best of Greek and Cypriot produce, as well as the “Les délices d'Aphrodite” restaurant which offers traditional Greek cuisine. "Le Bel Ordinary" is a restaurant come grocery store and a wine cellar for keen Epicureans; it features a huge table d'hôtes with a country-style table, high tables and a kitchen open on the bar with space for sixty guests in small or large groups. Finally, Michelin-starred restaurant “Oka” offers contemporary Franco-Brazilian gastronomy that combines the condiments of the Amazon rainforest with the excellence of French produce. The Pantheon, Notre-Dame, the grandes écoles, the faculties, the gardens, the arenas of Lutèce, the Gobelins are of course not to be missed and are just a few minutes away by foot!
