It is hard to stop marvelling at the sight of Tuscany. With beauty so powerful, nothing can escape it: not the fields and cypresses, hills and valleys, vineyards and olive trees, nor the towns and palaces, or the shadows and light. Everything blends together in a magical harmony. From the top of a promontory, this villa has long been part of the Sienese region's landscape and history. It has nonetheless kept pace with the times in a natural fashion, adding modern comforts without breaking from tradition. Here, travellers are enveloped in scents, colours and flavours. And for those looking to gorge themselves further on what the region has to offer, they need only walk to medieval Monepulciano and admire the sumptuous Renaissance palaces. Guests will want for nothing here.
After working in the fashion industry in Milan for nearly ten years, we arrived in Tuscany in the early 1990s. We first settled in Chianti before coming to live in Montepulciano. When we found the villa that has now become Fattoria San Martino, we were looking for a place to live with our family that was close to the city centre, and where we could create a guesthouse ideally located in the Tuscan hills. The property is less than a fifteen minute walk from the centre of Montepulciano on a private hill with a panoramic view of the historic town and the Val di Chiana's hilly landscape. Located at an altitude of 600m, the city enjoys a cool climate in summer and mild temperatures in spring and autumn.
The villa dates back to the 18th century. It has been completely renovated according to the principles of bio-architecture whose construction philosophy and main objective is to establish a relationship of balance between humans and the natural environment. This means using natural, non-polluting and insulating materials to avoid wasting energy. It also means choosing very high quality materials and enhancing their beauty through natural colours on the walls and precious woods such as mahogany on the parquet floors.
In around 1596, a watchtower to guard the passage of the Val di Chiana was built on the hill where the villa now stands. In the 18th century, the tower was widened and became a larger building with a square base. At the beginning of the 20th century a wealthy local family, who owned a great deal of land between Montepulciano and San Casciano dei bagni, restructured the villa to make a hunting lodge and gave it its current appearance. From the 1950s until 1990, the property was an agricultural farm producing vegetables, oil and wine. We bought the property in 2000 and restored it but kept the original structure. The main building is classified as a "Historic Villa" by the superintendence of Siena.
An authentic place where you can feel at home. An intimate and warm welcome into a family home that we have always frequented. A place that inspires through what we share: our experience, our work and the soul that we have created here. Our restaurant offers exclusively vegetarian and vegan cuisine as well as an outstanding selection of organic wines and local beers. Meals are served indoors or outdoors on the terraces overlooking Montepulciano and the Tuscan hills. A glass of wine or a herbal tea can also be enjoyed in the garden. Since we opened our doors twenty years ago, we have continually strived to create a business that respects the environment and local historical and architectural traditions. Here, humans are confronted with the beauty and harmony of nature and rediscover the simplicity of everyday things.
La Fattoria San Martino is located 800 meters from the Renaissance town of Montepulciano, which is also known as the "perla del Cinecento". Fifteen kilometers away is the town of Pienza, the birthplace of Pope Pius II (210th Pope of the Catholic Church). The centre of the town and the surrounding area, Val d'Orcia, are listed as world heritage sites. Several of Tuscany's thermal baths are located just a few kilometres away: Chianciano-Terme, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo, San Casciano dei Bagni. Our guests can also rent bicycles, vespas or e-bikes during their stay to explore the rolling landscapes of Tuscany. Finally, for horse lovers, rides can be arranged with our local partners.

Guests can participate in 45-minute intuitive vegetarian and vegan cooking classes. The recipes are the main focus of the sessions, but the experience is based on a sense of each participant's confidence, taste and imagination in order to create healthy and varied dishes. The participants then share their creations together.
