Location
The airport of Cornwall’s capital is just twenty kilometres from the seaside resort where this thatched cottage and its hamlet are located. The site is at the edge of a lagoon where ringed plovers and sandpipers among many others, have made their home. The town, shops and amenities are nonetheless less than five kilometres away.
Description
The stone cottage
It dates back to the end of 17th century and is built of irregular stonework. The roof is thatched and north/south facing. The structural elements (walls, roof structure, and roof) are all in good condition and have not required any major adjustments.
Ground floor
The entrance opens into a hall area that leads into a living room, kitchen, foot of the main staircase, bedroom with ensuite shower room and toilet. An untouched stone fireplace has pride of place in the main room.
Floor
A mezzanine study is located above the kitchen and is accessed via an open wooden staircase.
Some low shelving serves as a banister in the stairwell.
A bedroom with sloping ceiling leads into an open landing area where a wash basin and toilet have been installed.
Our opinion
The cottage truly blends into the landscape unobtrusively and is a reminder of rural life in 17th and 18th centuries, when reconciling the hardships and richness of working the land and sea were day to day living.
Today, the bitter realities of the past are no longer. Located in a remarkable and peaceful natural site, a setting of brilliant simplicity, the property could be used for bucolic getaways or as a base from where to partake in water sports with the sea just 200 m away. It is, however, in need of full renovation of floors, bathroom and toilet facilities and joinery to reach modern levels of comfort. The repainting and replacement of woodwork that is essential will provide the opportunity for the future owners to adapt this romantic nest to their taste, as much or as little as they like.
