Dinard, jewel of the Emerald Coast, is characterised by its beautiful Belle - Époque villas along the Breton coastal path “Sentier des douaniers” (the former customs officers’ path). The seaside resort developed when sea bathing became fashionable and has become very popular since the 19th century thanks to British aristocrats and American holidaymakers. The beach of l'Écluse, the casino, the popular Saturday market, the famous restaurants, the summer concerts of the Villa des Roches Brunes, all activities are accessible on foot or by bike. Every year since 1990, the city has also hosted the legendary British Film Festival, much to the delight of film lovers. The Emerald Coast is a land of water sports. Those who love hiking can admire its thousand shades of blue and green from the long-distance trail GR34. A thalassotherapy centre and an 18-hole golf course with sea views are nearby. The town centre is vibrant and very lively, just a few steps from the beach and marina. Saint-Malo with all important infrastructures such as the TGV station connecting Paris in 2h15 and the ferry-port is situated 10 km from the property. Rennes, the capital of Brittany, and its international airport are less than an hour’s drive away.


The property is located in one of the quiet streets, where the houses are dominated by tall trees and hidden from view by high stone walls, just a few steps from the beach and all amenities. A wrought iron gate opens onto a paved and shaded passageway running alongside the villa. Bordered by a low stone wall and some leafy trees, it leads to a stone porch with an old millstone marking the kitchen entrance. The façade windows have rounded arches, one door is topped by a small gothic arch window. A curious small dressed stone opening with two sections is crowned by a trefoil granite lintel decorated with floral motifs. The stone porch then leads on to the sunny front terrace of the villa. The property consists of two houses, facing both a large landscaped park, featuring period stones and ancient trees.

The villa

The villa is built of coursed granite masonry, with a hipped slate roof, the peaks of which are crowned with two zinc finials on the garden façade, and with gable roofs at the rear. Two arched windows with recessed vaults are supported by a moulded granite corbel supporting a statuette. On the upper level is a large window with a projecting sill and moulded stone frame. An elegant downpipe with a spiral decor runs down the façade, channelling rain water through the mouth of a dolphin into a granite font. A large opening on the ground floor features a limestone frame, with simple draped mouldings at the bottom. Two small carved figures adorn the lintel supports, which are topped by a small moulded offset. On the first floor, a mullioned window in the late Renaissance style boasts numerous mouldings and a triangular tympanum marked by projecting stones and crowned by beautifully executed ironwork. The right half of the façade features a horizontal segment that forms a simple decorative masonry buttress.

Ground floor
A glass door with small panes and an espagnolette window handle opens onto a living room with white and black tiles and a moulded white stone fireplace. The view of the park is perfectly aligned with the circular table on the terrace, a flowered pond and a nostalgic stone arch in the distance. This living room leads to an entrance hall where the central staircase of the house is located. A few steps lead to the kitchen, which is spacious, functional and bright. The laundry room and the garage are located in the extension of the house.
First floor
The landing leads on one side to a hallway with two small connecting bedrooms, a toilet and a shower room. On the other side, a corridor leads to three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The last room is a belvedere with a cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace and balcony. The many windows allow a vast amount of natural light to flow in - they open up a breathtaking view of the park.

The guest house

The adjoining house has its own terrace and garden area. It is surrounded by two opulent wisterias. Of the same materials as the villa, its facade has two French windows with dressed stone frames on the ground floor. The first floor offers three granite arched openings, one of which opens onto a balcony with direct access to the park. It comprises a kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom and toilet, and a small shed.

The park

The villa and its guest house overlook an exceptional garden: leafy and coniferous trees grow along a park dotted with ancient sculptures; some stone benches invite to linger and let the thoughts run free. A pond with a fountain, sculptures and water lilies in bloom marks the entrance to the park. A stone wall with two arched vaults and carved medallions is the centrepiece. It conceals a greenhouse and a secret garden that leads to the vegetable plot. A gate opens onto a discreet passageway that joins the street. A path lined with hornbeams leads to a bed of rosebushes exhaling their subtle perfumes, in the shade of an imposing laurel with a gnarled trunk. Raspberry bushes ripen along a low stone wall, a few steps from the fig tree. The whole garden bursts with a myriad of colours and scents, from spring to autumn.

Our opinion

The property strongly reflects the historic heritage of this ancient town, while boasting the architecture of Dinard's characteristic seaside villas. An American artist left his mark on this place long ago by creating a work of art in plant and stone. The interiors of the houses are waiting for a new look and a few brushstrokes to complete the work. Anyone familiar with the quiet charm of the Dinard villas will quickly realise that the location is particularly sought after and that the sale of this type of family estate is becoming increasingly rare. This is a striking property for its prime location, close to the beach and shops and at the same time protected from any disturbance, and for the available living space and the intrinsic quality of its buildings and grounds.
