One hour from Nice, near the Mont-d'Azur reserve,
in a park, a bourgeois Belle Époque residence
, ALPES-MARITIMES provence-cote-dazur FR

In the heart of the Préalpes d'Azur Regional Nature Park. The area is known not only for its rugged landscapes, but also for the Wild European Animal Reserve of the Monts d’Azur, a vast biological reserve populated by wild animals. The Caussol astronomical observatory was installed in this area which enjoys an exceptional quality and purity of air. Very popular with the bourgeoisie of the Côte d'Azur at the beginning of the century, a renowned climatic health resort, this is the “Suisse Provençale”, a name given on account of the elegant private residences. Access is easy, as the property is situated on a small road leading to the centre of the hamlet of Thorrenc.

Set in nearly two hectares of parkland, with unobstructed views over the surrounding hills, the property features a large residence built of local stone and half-timbering, embellished with wooden balconies. The park extends over a number of large, partly wooded terraces. The property also offers a large garage and various small garden buildings. At the bottom of the grounds, a building plot could be detached.

The house

Built as part of a vast programme to develop the area into a health resort with luxury hotels, the style of the main building is inspired by Russian dachas, mixing stone and wood, under a tiled roof. The large rectangular house is painted red, well-proportioned with covered projections for the south and north entrances, balconies on the first floor and large wooden sloping roofs. The solidity of the stone walls subtly combines with the wooden framework, the roof slopes and the three balconies on the south facade.

Ground floor
In the centre of the facade, the entrance door opens onto an enclosed porch with hexagonal windows on either side, under a small tiled roof. At the rear is a second entrance, also protected by a small awning. The entrance leads directly into the large living room which extends over the entire south-east corner of the building. Two fireplaces. To the rear, a small corridor opens onto the kitchen and a small dining room situated in a western wing of the building. The floors are terracotta-tiled. Large wooden beams adorn the ceilings.
First floor
The central staircase leads to a corridor which serves four bedrooms, three of which face south, each with a balcony. High double-glazed wooden windows let the light pour in. The floors are tiled with “Tomettes”, Provençal terracotta tiles. The master bedroom has a large wooden balcony with a view of the southern countryside.
Second floor
The central staircase leads to the third level, where the central corridor features a built-in cupboard and bookshelves. The four bedrooms on the first floor are all under the rafters and feature sinks in addition to the bathroom. In the room facing East, a small balcony overlooks the hills.
The parklands
The grounds beneath the house extend over about 2 hectares. In front of the building, a wide terrace bordered by a low stone wall separates the main “Restanque” (Provençal terrace) from the rest of the grounds. Numerous trees are planted in the meadows, leaving several open spaces. A small annex building facing the street houses a garage for two vehicles.

Our opinion

In the heart of an area known as “Suisse Provençale”, the property enjoys peace and quiet and an unobstructed view over the evergreen hills. The elegant wood and stone building offers a large number of rooms and could easily be used for a variety of purposes other than residential. The property, once very popular for the quality of the environment, has left its mark over the years: a group of exceptional buildings, witnesses of a privileged past and waiting for future development.
