Location

In the Morbihan countryside, the property is located in a village of 1000 inhabitants, close to larger towns and roads leading to Vannes or the Gulf in 30 minutes. From Vannes station, it only takes 2h30 to get to Paris by TGV.

Description

One of the surrounding country roads, interspersed with meadows and fields, leads to the entrance of the property. A gate opens onto a driveway lined with hydrangeas and beech trees leading to the castle and its outbuildings. At the heart of the estate, the castle is surrounded by gardens and woodlands where the many oaks that make up the majority of the species join magnolias and other Japanese cedars. The outbuildings consist of a longère (farmhouse) serving as guest house and various sheds and garages, a tower, a remnant of the former castle, a heated above-ground swimming pool and a garden shed.

The castle

The origins of the manor date back to the 16th century. A large main building was added in the 19th century on the north and west sides. Made of dressed granite stone, it offers three levels of living space and a lower garden level. The eastern side of the slate roof features ornamented front dormers interrupting the eaves. A bartizan supported by stepped masonry corbels and a tower, each with its own pepperpot roof, flank each corner of the main façade. In the centre, a hexagonal tower marks the entrance to the castle. It partly features cross and half-mullioned windows decorated with the coats of arms of the former masters of the place.


Ground floor
From the entrance hall with its high ceilings, two flights of steps lead to the castle's elevated ground floor. In the 16th century part of this level, there is a large drawing room with a monumental Renaissance fireplace with double mantel legs and an ornate beamed ceiling. A corridor leads to a bedroom-study which can be accessed from the outside via an elegant small horseshoe-shaped stone staircase. This part is complemented by a kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet. On the right, the hall serves the 19th century part: a dining room with walls decorated with blue and gold Lyon silk fabrics, with a fireplace and a lounge with a fireplace extended by a boudoir with underfloor heating and a trompe-l'oeil ceiling. The room features strip or Versailles parquet flooring.
First floor
A vast landing and a corridor lead to six bedrooms, one of which has walls adorned with fabrics from the Braquenié firm, with a boudoir, an alcove and numerous cupboards, as well as another, double in depth, in the main tower on the east side. Two shower rooms (one of which is Empire style) and a toilet complete the level. All rooms feature strip parquet flooring.
Second floor
A large landing leads on one side to a vast room with cathedral ceiling under exposed roof beams, workshop or study as well as five other bedrooms in need of refurbishment. An oratory, with wooded walls, perfectly preserved, is located in the upper part of the tower.
Garden level
This service level is accessed from the main entrance to the tower. It comprises an old kitchen, a boiler room, a storage area, a woodshed, a fruit room, a wine cellar and two storerooms.
Guest house
A former outbuilding sitting at right angles to the castle has been converted into a guest house. On two levels, it includes a living room, a kitchen and toilets on the ground floor, three bedrooms, two shower rooms with toilets on the first floor.
The stables
In the same outbuilding, in its extension on the east side follow former horse stalls.
Garage
A large shed with an attic serves as storage area and workshop. It is extended in its length by a vast new space that can accommodate many vehicles or numerous guests.

Our opinion

A family castle that has been renovated to an exceptional standard and maintained with passion by its owners for many years. The care given to a large part of its decoration, thanks to the intervention of a renowned heritage restorer, is just one of the reflections of the many attentions paid to the place. The two construction periods, separated by three centuries, harmoniously complement each other both inside and outside the castle. The quality of the renovation and the potential for interior development of the spaces to be refreshed are obvious.
