Between the Loire Valley and Burgundy, Puisaye is a region that remains discreet and a little off the beaten track. Scattered with forests, large ponds, sunken paths and undergrowth, it nevertheless inspired the creative genius of Colette who remained attached to the region all her life. Very close to the house where she lived when she was young, the Trémellerie estate has also housed a great artist, Henri Harpignies, nicknamed "the Michelangelo of the trees" by Anatole France. The house has since been transformed, but behind the modern comforts lies an ever-lively source of inspiration that anyone can draw on, no matter their wishes.
We fell in love with the La Trémellerie estate. Located less than two hours from Paris, it offers gardens, woods and buildings of character - an ideal setting to become the playground for our family, our creativity and our entrepreneurial spirit! While working as an architect in Paris and Burgundy, I was interested in the practice of fasting and alternative medicine for several years. My husband runs a tourism and leisure consultancy company and his expertise feeds our shared vision for La Trémellerie.
The origins of the La Trémellerie estate date back to the Middle Ages. At the time it was known as "le château" in the village and two towers from this period remain. The dwelling house consists of a part dating from the 17th century, and a large "bourgeois" house from the 19th century. The outbuildings are a perfect example of the neat 19th century vernacular architecture. The gardens greatly contribute to the charm of the estate and include a romantic 18th century terrace between the towers, majestic blue cedars, an orchard, a vegetable garden, vines, berries, wells, a forest and a meadow.
The estate of La Trémellerie has had many owners including painter Henri Harpignies who lived here for more than forty years from 1860 to his death in 1916. As a painter, landscaper and watercolourist, he was well-known during his lifetime and he certainly left his mark on the village of Saint -Privé. Somewhat forgotten due to the Impressionist and Modern movements, his work is still shown in museums in France and around the world (Valenciennes, Musée d´Orsay, Washington, etc.). Several of his famous paintings depict La Trémellerie. It was whilst Harpignies was here that the estate took on its definitive structure with a vocation that was both artistic and agricultural. It featured orchards and market gardens alongside decoration and pleasure in the romantic style of the second half of the 19th century. We bought the property in 2015 and completely restored it. We now welcome guests here and organise stays and courses with a focus on well-being.
