Au Fil du Temps (over the course of time) certainly lives up to its name! A faithful witness to both the local heritage and to the region's history of wine-growing that has now disappeared in this part of Alsace, this former farmhouse has benefited from a carefully executed renovation. Full advantage was taken of traditional and modern artisans' expertise, and new life was breathed into this savoir-vivre whilst still respecting the harmony of the place. From the heart of the former capital of Hanau-Lichtenberg, which still shelters many buildings of character behind its ramparts, guests can easily set off to discover a lesser-known Alsace, on the edge of the Vosges du Nord Regional Park.
We are both great lovers of Alsace, its history, its lands and its incredible traditional buildings. This house is one of the most beautiful illustrations of the region and we instantly fell for its charm.
Our house is one of the three largest wine farms in the Pays de Hanau, and the only one still in a good state of repair. Construction began in the 16th century and continued until the 19th. The property stayed within the Wolff family for four centuries. A magnificent half-timbered building, it has a Bastberg limestone barn and still features stables, pigsties and a porch. It is surrounded by remarkable landscaped grounds, and is located at the foot of the Bastberg nature reserve. The recent restoration took all the historical aspects of the house into account and the materials are authentic. They include period Alsatian roof-tiles known as "biberschwanz", antique floor-tiles, period beams and lime.
This former wine farm was operating at the time when the Bastberg hill (known as "Bàschtbärri" which means Mount Saint-Sébastien in Alsatian and which is now a regional nature reserve) was a great wine region. Many features of the property bear witness to this past, such as the wine press dating from 1695 or the fireback dating from 1818 that depicts Bacchus surrounded by vines. During the Second World War, the property hosted Pierre Dac and cellist André Navarra.
The house has a garden and a permaculture vegetable patch. The products provided (soaps, shower gels, cleaning products) are organic and the breakfasts and meals are prepared and cooked by us using short-circuit organic products. Many events take place throughout the year such as meetings with winegrowers and tastings of Bastberg wines, soap-making courses, permaculture workshops, culinary workshops, histories of traditional Alsatian buildings, and horse-drawn carriage rides.
A hike in the forest of Petite Pierre where, with a little luck, you will be able to hear the bellowing of the deer in the autumn which is a truly exceptional moment! Meet Arnold Karcher (a winegrower) and Michelle Csuka (a soap maker) who are local artisans with great talent. In the historic centre of Bouxwiller, Au charme du Passé is home to a pastry shop, a tea room, an antique shop and a museum. In the neighbouring village, the Herrenstein farm sells delicious local products. Cédric Brenner, an artisan and artist, creates unique works and objects in old wood. Visit the gardens of the Château de Bouxwiller in summer or the free Grainothèque (Seed Library) at the Pays de Hanau museum in Bouxwiller. The Bastberg hill regional nature reserve is home to fourteen species of wild orchids and more than five hundred species of insects including several endangered butterflies. It is also famous for hosting the witches' sabbath.
This Alsatian house with traditional character, period furniture and period decor is available for filming and photo shoots. Also accessible are the flower garden, the large enclosed courtyard with a century-old chestnut tree, the original stables, the pigsties and the barn.
