in the centre of the Kreiz-Breizh area, where all Brittany’s walking trails meet
Brittany, a region which was once a duchy, is first and foremost a peninsula. In its centre and at the heart of its traditions, the area known as Kreiz-Breizh houses this manor. The seaside is but an hour’s drive away, whether to the east, the north or the south.
The manor house
This house, spanning two levels under an attic floor, initially appears to be rectangular in shape. It is topped with a gable roof, featuring three roof dormers, and has shutters or older bars at the windows. An old, adjoining outbuilding is now partially given over to living space. A vast garage, with a wide porch, has been added to its end.
But that is without taking the unexpected depth of the house into account. A wing, in line with the entrance door, set at right angles and completely out of sight of the facade, extends behind the house.
The main entrance door opens into a vast reception room. A solid wood stairway goes upstairs. Authenticity reigns courtesy of the old flagstones and exposed beams. There is also a granite fireplace. Two steps, straight in front of the entrance door, go up to the rear wing where the main bedroom, its bathroom and its dressing room have direct access to a swimming pool. Another two doors in the reception room provide access, on the one hand, to a kitchen with a more rustic granite fireplace and, on the other, to a vast lounge with a cathedral ceiling and a mezzanine. A tall fireplace dominates this spacious area, a rarity in a house from this era.
The stairway goes up to a hall which provides access to five bedrooms, housed in the main building and the rear wing. Fireplaces, wooden parquet flooring and old doors reflect the passage of time. Three of the bedrooms are cleverly adjoined to one another, but closed doors ensure privacy.
A second, less robust, wooden stairway goes up directly into the “family library” on the second floor. This vast room could be used for a multitude of purposes: a reading or games room, a dormitory or even a table-tennis room. Three roof dormers illuminate this spacious area exuding character and featuring a high roofing framework. Behind a funny little wooden door, the attic above the rear wing could be converted. The outstanding, hexagonal roofing framework makes it possible to imagine the top of a former tower and its hip roof.
This chapel stands at the entrance to the wooded parklands, but in sight of the manor house. Small and awaiting restoration, it is nevertheless weathertight. A granite font set on a pedestal appears to keep watch over the entrance.
The wooded parklands
The manor house’s surroundings are undulating and wooded. The property blends beautifully in with its natural setting. The entrance parklands are dotted with a variety of species. The woods, planted with tall, slender conifers, at the rear of the manor house look out over the meadows. Numerous evergreen species ensure that the house is kept out of sight of onlookers all year round.
The swimming pool
This rectangular swimming pool was constructed in 1984, with a constant depth of 1.50 m. It will need some restoration works before it can be used.
In these greatly-changing times, recharging one’s batteries in natural surroundings, in a house more than 400 years old, near to a pastoral river canal, in the shelter of a no-through road, amidst parklands with protective trees, becomes more of a luxury every day. Consequently, this manor house could quickly become the ideal haven for going back to an era when time passed more slowly. This property is still in its original condition, some doors creak, some of the glass panes contain bubbles and an outdated wash-hand basin is still in the main bedroom. Both the eiderdown and the fireplace are there for the winter. Everything is ready to provide residents with a taste of the past and let them quietly envisage the future. In this Celtic country abounding in megaliths and Gallic vestiges, owners of this manor house can but appreciate their natural surroundings.
