Some stunning landscapes make you wish you could disappear, as though they need to be left completely undisturbed in order to fully express their natural beauty. The well-named "Casa Modesta" has committed to this stance, the purity of its lines fit perfectly with the Ria Formosa natural park. Modesty, however, does not equal a lack of personality or individuality. On the foundations of a family home, the new whitewashed walls enhanced with bricks and light wood heighten the perspectives and volumes in a "stripped-back" style - a direct invitation to a life of well-being and contemplation.
Our great-grandfather built this house, subsequent generations have lived here after inheriting it. We are the current generation - my brother, sister and I decided to transform our family home and open it up to rural tourism in this little known region in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park (known as one of the seven wonders of Portugal).
My sister is an architect, her firm PAr. reinvented the original house using traditional knowledge, architectural culture, craftsmanship and local materials. They thus translated ancestral legacies into a more contemporary language, creating and nourishing social and economic dynamics that are linked to local arts and crafts.
Our grandfather, Joaquim Modesto de Brito (an "old sea dog") was known to all as "the champion". He was present when the project began in 1940. So many memories live on in these walls and lands that we, the grandchildren, could not allow them to fade. This is how Casa Modesta was born, by combining rural tourism with modernity. Our door is always open to those who arrive with the same joy that carried us to the arms of our grandparents when we were children.
It may sound biased, but you will experience the 'best morning' in the whole of the Algarve at Casa Modesta. In the summer, you can enjoy shell-fishing on the beach or learn how to bake traditional bread with our 84-year-old grandmother and her sister, Aunt Adelina. We can introduce you to bird watching and the veranda turns into a planetarium for gazing at the stars when night falls. For the well-being of our guests, we offer rituals using the natural properties of olive trees, almonds, fleur de sel and local algae. Some may call this a "holiday", but we call it "culture" and every day we are amazed by the little miracles that nature can accomplish.
Casa Corvo, a fish restaurant in Fuseta. The natural park of Ria Formosa for its exceptional landscapes. The Capela do Monte for its architectural sobriety, built by Siza Vieira, a famous Portuguese architect and winner of the Prix Pritzker in 1992. You must go shopping at the Mercados de Olhão, a covered market by the sea. It is a singular structure composed of two red brick buildings topped with domes and is one of the best places in the area for fish, shellfish and local fruits and vegetables. At Projecto TASA in Loulé, artists and craftsmen exhibit their work and welcome visitors in their workshops.
