Location
For several centuries in the 11th arrondissement, the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and Sainte-Marguerite districts were entirely focused on the craft industry, with plenty of cabinetmakers, varnishers, gilders, wood inlayers and upholsterers. A good number of the buildings, passageways and alleys from those bygone days now play host to in vogue chefs and designers in a hip and bohemian atmosphere. On either side of the paved passage, there are former craft industry buildings dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The former workshop, which dates back to that period, has stood the test of time to become perfectly in tune with the present century.
The property can be reached easily, thanks to its proximity to Place de la Nation and the metro stations Rue des Boulets (on line 9) and Nation (on lines 1, 2, 6 and 9, as well as RER A). Both are within three minutes on foot.
Description
The white walls and light-coloured oakwood flooring enhance the feeling of brightness in the apartment. A very short corridor leads to two bedrooms that open out onto a private alleyway. One of them boasts an en suite shower room and there is also a separate lavatory, a utility room with cupboard space and a bathroom behind the latter. A final bedroom, which is currently used as an office, is bathed in light through an internal window that looks onto the kitchen. The heating in the apartment is provided by a collective gas-fired boiler.
Our opinion
This property boasts the peaceful atmosphere of a typically Parisian cobbled alleyway, free of any cars, transporting residents back to the lively atmosphere of a city where crafts were the beating heart of the district. The apartment requires no work and is ready to welcome its future occupants. It could be a very functional and well-laid out place for a family, without any waste of space. It could also prove to be a source of inspiration for an artist or anybody seeking peace, quiet and a pleasant setting in which to work.
The workshop, which has been entirely renovated with quality materials, is the perfect example of the ideal combination between 19th-century craft heritage and a modern living space boasting optimal comfort and excellent energy efficiency.
