Location
This street was created in 1400 and was only known by the moniker Rue de Tournelles from 1546 because it ran alongside the eastern flank of the castle of the same name, which wasdemolished during the reign of Henri IV to give way to the Place des Vosges. The district is a short walk from Place de la Bastille as well as Place des Vosges and is punctuated with art galleries, café terraces and cobbled courtyards hidden behind imposing carriage gates. After erecting the Hôtel de Sagonne townhouse, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, who was the great-nephew of François Mansart as well as his pupil, became the favourite architect of Louis XIV, creating masterpieces for him such as Les Invalides, Place Vendôme and a part of the extension to the Chateau de Versailles, including the famous Hall of Mirrors. Stations on Metro lines 1, 5 and 8 are a few minutes’ walk away.
Description
Our opinion
In this district steeped in history and witness to a prestigious past as well as exceptional architectural heritage, the edifices have been well preserved, as is the case with this apartment. The windows on the third floor enjoy an unbeatable view of noble buildings and the smartly laid out rooms with an impressive ceiling height are bathed in light. This elegant property could be used as an ideal Parisian base for visiting or as a main residence in a privileged setting. The famous 18th-century decorator, collector and art enthusiast Jacques Garcia lived here for more than ten years. For those who set up home in this townhouse listed as a historical monument since 1943, they will be following in the footsteps of the greatest architect of the Great Century.
