Our opinion
Concrete, glass blocks, exposed steel. On the Costa do Castelo, running alongside the ramparts of São Jorge Castle, architect Pedro Domingos has converted a dilapidated building into three apartments with separate entrances, in a brutalist style that owes as much to geometric rigour as to Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre, that iconic 1932 work which Le Corbusier himself regarded as an absolute benchmark. The influence is evident in every opening, every skylight, every choice of material. On the first floor, two bedrooms and a balcony from which the rooftops of old Lisbon and the Church of Graça form, at all hours, a picture that the apartment’s neutral colour scheme makes no attempt to rival.
