Description

The chateau is situated at the end of a long, tree-lined drive, surrounded by grounds dotted with age old trees. The 19th-century edifice combines the rigours of neo-classical style with the gentleness of a Norman stately home. The tidy and symmetrical, two-storey main facade is topped by an attic level punctuated with dormer windows. The omnipresent red-brick is underlined by white Caumont stone quoins, cornices, plus window and door surrounds, forming a contrast typical of the architecture in the Pays de Caux. The slate Mansard roof is dotted with chimney stacks.

The apartment

On the ground floor, the entrance door opens into an L-shaped hall, leading to a utility room, a lavatory and the kitchen. This is followed by a long and wide corridor leading on one side and another to a lounge with a marble fireplace, two bedrooms and a shower room with a lavatory. The decorative elements are similar in all the rooms: chevron parquet, period wood panelling, wainscotting and high, richly moulded ceilings. The reception rooms can be reached through small-paned double-leaf doors. The windows are protected by finely crafted wrought-iron guard-rails. The impressive ceiling heights emphasise the feeling of space.

The former maid’s room and cellar

A former maid’s room situated beneath the rafters has been renovated and boasts a washbasin. The cellar can be reached via a staircase near to the entrance door to the chateau.

Our opinion

This elegant apartment on the ground floor of a chateau is situated in the Pays de Caux, an area that inspired Maupassant and Flaubert. A sense of balance, measure and simplicity predominates in a period décor that avoids ostentation, combining the French way of life and the calm beauty of the surrounding Normandy countryside. In the reception rooms, wide windows offer fine views of the grounds, its coppices and rows of carefully pruned yew trees. The chateau pays witness to the bourgeois way of life in late 19th-century major residences in Normandy. It is a place where nature and architecture complement each other and where the stones seem to converse with the foliage.
