A 20m² Parisian studio apartment, masterfully renovated and bathed in
natural light, nestled on Île Saint-Louis river island with a clear view
Paris, PARIS paris 75004 FR

Location

Located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, Île Saint-Louis river island is one of the city’s two inhabited islands on the River Seine. Its history is closely tied to that of King Louis IX of France. The island was originally made up of two river islets: Île Notre-Dame and Île aux Vaches, where Saint Louis, King of France, would go to pray in the 13th century. According to legend, the king took the cross on the island’s uninhabited heath before going on crusades to the Middle East. In 1614, the waterway that separated the two river islets was filled in to form today’s larger Île Saint-Louis island. Noblemen of the kingdom of France then decided to build townhouses on this site with help from the greatest architects of the 17th century. The island is still a highly sought-after district today, in the shade of its age-old poplars that grow by the water. The metro station Pont Marie, on line 7, is only five minutes away on foot.

Description

The studio apartment lies up on the fourth and top floor of a plain 18th-century building with a rendered facade punctuated with stone courses. The edifice stands in the very heart of Île Saint-Louis island. It offers around 25m² of floor area – or around 15m² of liveable floor area according to France’s Carrez law. The communal areas are decorated with old fireplace plates. A timber staircase with a balustrade of wooden balusters bears witness to the historical character of the edifice. The apartment faces south. It is bathed in an abundance of natural light. You can see the River Seine from it. The interior designer who renovated the dwelling chose an optimised single-space design. A fitted kitchenette with oak units has been discreetly integrated into the studio apartment and a shower room with a lavatory lies behind a glazed partition wall. Old hexagonal terracotta tiles adorn the floor. They go well with the stone fireplace – a second-hand item from a chateau that adds a touch of nobility beneath the exposed beams of the roof frame. Each detail has been carefully considered, from the bespoke cupboards to the 19th-century sculpted doors and the flower-patterned cast-iron radiator. A wardrobe is fitted discreetly beside the shower room. The recent renovation has not only given the place real comfort, but also a D rating for energy efficiency.

Our opinion

Île Saint-Louis river island, in the historical heart of Paris, is both a calm neighbourhood, where inhabitants and shopkeepers rub shoulders like villagers, and an emblem of the French capital that is known throughout the world. It mixes building types, yet all its edifices are united by a shared passion for a unique character of built heritage. Indeed, sumptuous townhouses and more modest historical dwellings are brought together in delightful harmony. A taste for a certain art of living drives the island’s inhabitants, who live almost oblivious to the bustle beyond the branches of the River Seine that surround the quaint island. This apartment is nestled in the middle of a world whose refinement and uniqueness it mirrors. On its own scale, it reflects a larger structure with all its amenities. This top-floor haven would be a comfortable refuge for any lover of the old heart of Paris.
