Location
The 16th arrondissement of Paris was a rural locality until the late 18th century. At the time, the fields, orchards and woods surrounded three small villages: Passy, Auteuil and Chaillot. It was only when Napoleon III set out his architectural ambitions that Baron Haussmann, in charge of rebuilding the city, undertook to urbanise these vast, virgin expanses and erect the many buildings that line the vast tree-lined avenues in the western part of the sector. The suburbs were replaced by townhouses, parks and promenades. The district where the building is situated soon met with resounding success, with bourgeois families and the celebrities of the time setting up residence here. In this townhouse, Georges Feydeau, who was at the peak of his career, wrote his vaudeville light comedies, which are still performed on the stages of Paris today. Many renowned school establishments, such as the Lycée Janson de Sailly senior high school, are close to the property, which is situated in a street perpendicular to Avenue Victor Hugo.
Description
After passing through the carriage gate, a sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux depicting a goat and 4 cupids welcomes visitors. Opposite, a large, marble staircase with a remarkable wrought-iron balustrade leads to the first floor on which the property is located. It can also be reached via an elevator. The entrance is made up of a hall with grey and red marble flooring and could serve as the setting for sculptures or works of art. The ceiling height of 5 metres further enhances this majestic impression. Overlooking the street, a living room with a ceiling boasting very ornate moulding and wood-panelled walls could be used as an office or a bedroom. Two bathrooms open directly into this room. Opposite, there is a room into which light streams through a large glass roof typical of 19th-century galleries. It is fitted with Versailles wood stripped flooring and the oak wainscotting is enhanced by a Hubert Robert inspired overmantel mirror in the shape of a door. An adjacent dining room is followed by a kitchen and an office. An interior staircase leads to the second floor, which has two bedrooms as well as a bathroom. The master bedroom is located on the third floor, in the attic level, and boasts exposed metal beams that bestow an industrial aspect upon it. In the corner, there is a semi-open-plan bathroom.
Our opinion
This apartment is located in the sophisticated northern part of the 16th arrondissement, which is home to a succession of townhouses, private villas and luxurious buildings. It is near to the 8th arrondissement and its luxury boutiques. The district boasts many renowned restaurants and shops. The prestigious nature of the place, which was home to personalities such as Georges Feydeau and Jacque Fath, becomes apparent immediately after passing through the carriage gate, which contrasts with the sober façade of the building. With its wood panelling, the quality of its materials and the scale of its dimensions, the apartment is perfectly suited for hosting large-scale receptions. The vast, richly decorated rooms on the main floor, topped by the bedrooms on the upper levels, harmoniously combine reception and family use.
