A splendid Parisian apartment to be freshened up somewhat, nestled on the fourth floor
of a 19th-century edifice in the city’s prestigious district Saint-Germain-des-Prés
Paris, PARIS paris 75007 FR

Location

The apartment lies in an edifice in the most prestigious section of the street Rue de l’Université, between the River Seine and Boulevard Saint-Germain. In the 16th century, the street was known as Chemin des Treilles and led to the former island Île aux Treilles. Today, the street’s name refers to Paris University, which is better known as the Sorbonne. In the 12th century, Paris University acquired a plot along the River Seine to the west of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. And in 1639, this plot was sold to become a new district of Paris. The main road through it took on the name Rue de l’Université. The apartment is conveniently close to public transport links. Nearby, there are the metro stops Rue du Bac (line 12) and Saint-Germain-des-Prés (line 4). Both are less than 400 metres away from the dwelling.

Description

The edifice has a ground floor and four upper floors. It was built under King Louis-Philippe I of France. Its ashlar facade is elegantly understated and punctuated with wrought-iron guardrails. On the ground floor, a blue Renaissance-style boutique that dates back to the 19th century is one of the district’s curiosities. You go through the carriage entrance door to reach a second edifice, which has an inner court. In this building, the apartment lies up on the fourth floor. Only a staircase leads up to the dwelling. The edifice has a particularity: each floor is taken up entirely by a single apartment and each of these apartments is a dual-aspect dwelling. Beyond the apartment’s entrance door, a small hallway connects straight to a south-facing lounge, which is extended with an office. An original Prussian stove is still fitted, as is an ochre-marble fireplace. A half-open dining room adjoins a large kitchen with a floor of terracotta tiles. From the office, you reach a bedroom. It looks down at the inner court. There is a separate lavatory too, between a large bathroom and the bedroom. The apartment was last renovated in 1980, hence the presence of certain materials that were fashionable then, including carpeting, cork and suspended plaster ceilings. A gas boiler heats up the dwelling and its water.

Our opinion

This rare gem is a remarkable dwelling in the heart of one of the French capital’s most chic districts. With its subtle decor, the apartment is at once luxurious and unpretentious. Here, in the Left Bank area of Paris, townhouses were designed by the greatest architects of the 17th and 18th centuries. The property is a delightful haven for anyone who loves discretion. All the traits of prestigious Parisian apartments can be admired in this home. Once freshened up somewhat, this dwelling will offer a hushed, soothing ambience characterised by elegance and refinement.
