Location
Known for centuries for its furniture-related crafts, this part of the 11th arrondissement was formerly more centred on metallurgy. The urban fabric still retains many features of this past, such as many industrial buildings, courtyards and alleys. Willy Ronis photographed the daily life of the neighbouring Ménilmontant district between the 1930s and the end of the 1960s, and the painter Alfred Sisley was inspired by the atmosphere of the nearby Canal St Martin, which has also been immortalised on the screen. The picturesque Belleville market and the park of the same name are only a stone’s throw away. Offering trendy bars and restaurants with numerous theatres and cabarets, this district is well served by public transport, bus and metro, with the Place de la République nearby.
Description
On the right, after climbing a set of 4 steps, the outdoor space surrounded by bamboo precedes the entrance to the loft apartment. A fully equipped U-shaped kitchen with a waxed concrete floor features 2 bar tops separating the outdoor space and the living room. In addition to the large entrance door, the glass roof provides illumination from above and lets plenty of natural light pour in. On the right, a rough concrete wall with a door supports a staircase. At the back of the ground floor level are a shower room and a toilet. On the first level, an opening has been created in the floor, overlooking the living room, and the ceiling follows the slope of the roof, with its visible metal framework. To the left is a mezzanine lounge area with a wood burning stove. At the back, a glass door gives access to a roof terrace built into the roof's slope. To the right of the staircase, a balcony overlooks the living room and leads to a master suite, a bedroom and an en suite bathroom, closed off by a door.
Our opinion
According to Victor Hugo, "this old faubourg is a hero". Since the redevelopment of the Place de République and the pedestrianisation of the Canal St Martin, the eleventh arrondissement, once known for its revolutionary history, has become a symbol of a fashionable and bohemian lifestyle. Perfectly in keeping with the artisans’ past and workshops, this cleverly redesigned duplex loft apartment offers a glass roof, mezzanines, a Saint-Tropez style terrace built in the sloping roof and even a bamboo-protected outdoor space. Right from the entrance, the cheer of an open and fully equipped kitchen sets the tone of a house: volumes, overhead light, waxed concrete, ample space. Located between Ménilmontant and the Canal St Martin, a district teeming with young chefs' restaurants and fashionable boutiques. Here your dreams can come true, without needing any renovation works.
