Our opinion
When a Scotsman who had made his fortune in Egypt decided to settle in Cologny, the Neo-Tudor style mingled with Orientalism. The Murano chandeliers and Venetian fountains spoke a language that Lake Geneva had never heard before. The castle’s architecture defied local conventions. The stately chapel stands in a place without lords. Four years of renovation have not smoothed over these contradictions—they have reignited them. Those who move in will be accepting a home that does not seek tranquility, but rather self-assertion.
