Description

A 150m-long driveway lined with a double row of beeches leads to the chateau, around which its 34 hectares of grounds extend. The grounds include two lakes. One lake covers one hectare and the other lake covers around 3,000m². The estate also includes a garden with fruit trees, a former washing place and a range of outhouses. The grounds are dotted with tall trees, some of which are 400 years old. The outhouses include an orangery, an old farm complex with a dwelling, two greenhouses, and a small annexe. A chapel dating back to the chateau’s period of construction stands at the edge of the estate.

The chateau

The current owner’s ancestors ordered construction of this chateau, which was designed by the architect Nicolas Théberge and built in 1860. In designing the edifice, this architect, a graduate of the Paris fine arts school, drew inspiration from the majestic Château d’Azay-le-Rideau in the Loire Valley. The chateau is neo-Gothic in style. Turrets with conical roofs mark its four corners. The edifice has a garden-level floor, a raised ground floor, a first floor and a second floor. It stands on the remains of a stronghold that was destroyed during the French Revolution. The entire edifice is built of granite from the nearby town of Louvigné-du-Désert. Large arched windows punctuate its facade. The chateau is crowned with a hipped slate roof dotted with dormers.

The garden level
The garden-level floor has a kitchen, a utility room, a wine cellar, a storeroom and a dining room with four tiled walls and a granite fireplace. A boiler room contains a 4,000-litre oil tank and a boiler for the home’s central heating.

The ground floor
A granite staircase leads up to the entrance: a wooden double door that takes you into a spacious hallway with oak strip flooring. Here a double staircase climbs upstairs. Opposite the entrance door, a double door takes you to a small lounge that leads straight out into the garden. A dining room and a large lounge lie on either side of it. The walls of the large lounge are adorned with three mirrors in gilded wooden frames. Oak chevron parquet and a marble fireplace also embellish this lounge. The dining room features a granite fireplace. This dining room connects to a kitchen and a flight of backstairs. A carpeted bedroom with a bathroom and lavatory takes up one corner of the ground floor.

The first floor
A vast landing connects to five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lavatory and a storage space. The landing walls are painted with a faux marbling design.

The second floor
The flight of backstairs leads up to the second floor, where there are seven bedrooms, a bathroom and a lavatory. All these rooms have sloping attic ceilings. A billiard room, a photography laboratory and a workshop complete this top floor. A trapdoor leads to a loft.

The chapel
A granite chapel stands a long way from the chateau. It has stained-glass windows and an altar. A pattern of black and white stone slabs adorns its floor. An outside rope can be pulled to ring the chapel’s bell.

The orangery
An orangery faces south. It is bathed in natural light. Today it is used as a sculpture workshop. A large room lies upstairs.

The garage
There are two parking spaces with paved floors.

The former rural farm
There is a former farm complex made up of agricultural buildings, a bakehouse and a dwelling to be restored.

The garden
Grassy expanses take up the area immediately around the chateau. A walled section on the grounds includes a tennis court and a greenhouse.

Our opinion

This charming family chateau is a dazzling gem of romanticism, characterised by its four slender turrets that rise proudly towards the sky. The majestic edifice has been remarkably well preserved. It is set in a bucolic backdrop: 34 hectares of delightful grounds where this granite neo-Gothic chateau towers over the lush countryside of Normandy, not far from the enchanting island abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. Its elegantly understated interior is bathed in natural light and adorned with decor from the chateau’s period of construction. The view from this splendid edifice stretches a long way, past the property’s outhouses and calm lakes abounding in fish. Here you can admire beautiful vistas of this unique estate.
