Close to the village of Macau, this former viticultural castle is approx. fifteen minutes from Bordeaux Lac by car. The regional capital can also be accessed in forty minutes by train from the village train station linking it with Paris in less than three hours. This residence is in the heart of the prestigious Haut-Médoc vineyards, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Shops, schools, medical practices are just a few minutes away in this village of 4000 inhabitants.
As early as the 1740s, this estate is cited as being a residence belonging to the Bordeaux aristocracy. It was passed down in a family for generations until the French Revolution. In 19th century, numerous alterations were undertaken, in particular the building of the three pavilions. The property was modernised: new farm buildings, a workman’s house, dovecote and water reservoir were added. In 20th century, part of the vineyards were sold to the neighbouring castles.
The rectangular main building is flanked by three half-pavilions: one central and two protruding at the north and south ends. The main façade is decorated. The ground floor is continuous and slighted raised. A moulded cornice tops the entire ground floor. The upper floor of the central pavilion comprises three baluster windows on sills. The slate roof of the three pavilions, recently renovated, features dormer windows with scrolls and triangular pediments. The half-pavilions only have one window on the second floor.
The oriental façade opens out onto a large garden where there is a greenhouse, water tower and octagonal stone and brick hen house, recognised notably by its farm animal decorations.
The entrance is via the double door of the central building and a flight of stone stairs. This double aspect area offers beautiful views over the park. To the right of the entrance is a lounge-library and to the left a suite of four rooms: lounge, sitting room, dining room and kitchen. Access to the first sleeping area with three bedrooms and two shower rooms is via a corridor off the entrance. The rooms have either herringbone parquet floors or original terracotta floor tiles.
Access to the upper floor is via a winding stone staircase. It leads to both the attic and the south pavilion and a master bedroom, dressing room and bathroom in the central pavilion. This area comprises a 40 m2 bedroom, dressing room and bathroom with a view overlooking the park. The south pavilion awaits conversion.
Another staircase leads to the upper floor of the north pavilion. Here the space has been converted into a study and sleeping area on a mezzanine.
The outbuildings and houses
The farm buildings, at right angles to the castle, are symmetrically opposite a pavilion on the street side. A wall with railings and wrought iron gate connects them. These two buildings are currently used as private two-storey houses (70 m2 and 100 m2). A third 150 m2 house has been renovated in the north wing. All three houses are currently let out. The monthly rental income represents €1 900. The wine warehouse to the south has kept its pink rendering, typical of the region. It comprises a vat, winery, storage areas, and old flat with mezzanine previously used by farmhands. At the rear of the wing, a large flat (300 m2) awaits renovation. It comprises a lounge with fireplace, kitchen and two bedrooms. This ensemble is surrounded by vineyards.
The park and vineyard
They face the two facades of the residence. The garden with its riprap pond can be seen from the main façade. At the rear of the property, in a quiet area, a large park leads down to a pond. It is full of hundred-year-old trees, a green house, stone water tower and old octagonal hen house decorated with ceramic tiles of farm animals.
The vineyard is next to the south-facing wine warehouse. Half a hectare of vineyard is still in operation and produces a qualitative wine. The vineyard is currently leased to a tenant and allows the current owners to have their own cuvee. A meadow could be replanted to complete the vineyard.
In the heart of some very prestigious vineyards and close to Bordeaux, this property has many advantages. On more than 2000 m2 of built-up surfaces, the property has considerable potential, particularly in terms of real estate income. Other parts of the estate can also be converted without disturbing the future occupants.
These multiple buildings, large spaces, quality renovation works, charm of the coloured facades, vineyard, lush park,
fish pond and bridge form a pleasurable country residence at the gates of Bordeaux.
