Description

A driveway leads up to the chateau from a country lane. The majestic edifice built in the 19th century towers in a commanding position. The building is made of rubble stone rendered with lime coating. It has three main sections, each crowned with a high hipped slate roof. At the rear, the central section forms a tower with three faces that protrude slightly. This tower is capped with a tall polygonal roof crowned with a roof lantern. The chateau has four floors, including a garden level and a loft. Triangular pediments crown the ground-floor windows and arched pediments cap the first-floor windows. The dormers in the roofs are richly decorated. The cornices of modillions and the quoins in relief are made of tuffeau stone, as are the front and rear elevations of the central section. On both sides of the edifice, staircases edged with stone balustrades lead up to terraces and take you inside the chateau. The tall French windows on the ground floor are also adorned with balustrades, as are the central section’s north and south balconies on the first floor.

The large edifice stands proudly in the middle of almost four hectares of grounds where old trees of different species grow. From this tall dwelling, you can see a long way into the distance. The surrounding countryside is lush and undulating.

The chateau

The garden level
A service entrance leads into a broad corridor that connects to a hunting room, three bedrooms, a shower room with a lavatory, a linen room, a boiler room, a wood store, a cellar, two storerooms, one of which is used as a pantry, and a flight of backstairs. Most of the rooms here have a floor of terracotta tiles. There is a fireplace in the hunting room and another one in one of the bedrooms.

The ground floor
A lounge forming a spacious entrance hall connects to an office and to two extra lounges. It also connects to a hallway that leads to a dining room, a kitchen, a lavatory and a flight of backstairs. The office, the two extra lounges and the dining room connect to each other directly. Herringbone parquet and wood strip flooring adorn the rooms. The lounges and the office have marble fireplaces and the dining room features a timber fireplace with a finely carved mantelpiece flanked with double columns with Corinthian capitals. The lounges are embellished with dado panelling around the walls and fine mouldings around the ceilings. The dining room also has refined dado panelling and the spaces between its ceiling beams are painted with gold crosses on a red background. Tall French windows with indoor shutters fill the different rooms with natural light. From the lounge forming a vast entrance hall, the main staircase climbs upwards. It has a finely carved timber balustrade and three flights with two intermediate landings. This main staircase only leads up to the first floor. The second floor, in the loft space, is reached via the backstairs: a single timber flight with quarter turns.

The first floor
The landing and the corridor that extends it connect to six bedrooms, a lavatory, a flight of backstairs and two bathrooms, one of which needs to be finished. Wood strip flooring extends across the rooms. Some of the floors are carpeted. There is a marble fireplace in most of the rooms.

The second floor
Only the flight of backstairs connects to the top floor, which is in the loft. A corridor runs along this level and connects to a bathroom, a shower room with a lavatory, a roof space of around 47m², and six bedrooms, some of which have a fireplace. The rooms on this level have floors of terracotta tiles. They need to be converted.

Our opinion

This grand edifice is a stunning gem of architecture. When you behold this majestic chateau, you are astounded by the ornamental wealth of its symmetrically styled elevations, the soaring heights of its tall slate roofs, and the theatrical design of its front and rear steps. Inside, the rooms are bright, spacious and elegantly understated. They look out at the surrounding countryside. The chateau is ready for you to settle into it straight away, though some renovation work is needed up in the loft spaces. The property is conveniently close to the beautiful city of Angers and you can easily cycle to the River Loire from this fine home. The roofs could also be renovated to fulfil the true potential of this remarkable dwelling.
