Description

Standing in a dominant position, the château, which has 20 habitable rooms, dominates the Allier valley, with exceptional views as far as the Dômes and Livradois mountains. The buildings are arranged in a square around an open courtyard on the east side, where they can be accessed via a drawbridge. While its round towers and keep give it a medieval appearance, the large Renaissance and 18th-century windows promise a bright interior. The few houses in the hamlet face the entrance, while the other facades of the château look out over the countryside.

The château

Beyond the entrance gates, visitors cross an inner courtyard with a cross of stone pathways marking out four lawned flowerbeds planted with box trees. A thick hedge closes off the grounds on the hamlet side.

The main door, topped by a Renaissance pediment, opens in the middle of the central facade on the west side, with two windows on either side. On the left, the south wing includes the Romanesque chapel, nestling at the foot of a majestic cylindrical keep. On the right, the north wing has its own entrance door. The buildings are three storeys high, with attic space above. The roofs are covered with flat Bourbonnais tiles, and the walls have a stone and mortar bond. The white limestone ashlar surrounds of the windows add character to the building.

The ground floor
The door to the north wing opens onto a hall leading to a large living room that takes up the entire width of the château, with a French-style ceiling, terracotta floor tiles and a beautiful Renaissance fireplace.
A vaulted, stone-paved room in between, with two windows looking out onto the courtyard, leads to the dining room.

The dining room
A vast 80 m² room with a large fireplace, six windows, a flagstone floor and a French-style ceiling. It opens onto the central gallery and also onto a small garden suspended over the moat, built on the levelled out north-west tower. Another hallway follows on from this, which leads to a series of rooms. First there is the old medieval kitchen, with its fireplace that takes up an entire wall, then a vaulted room, also with a large fireplace, which was probably used as a pantry in medieval times, finally there is a study/library and a spiral staircase leading up to the first floor.

The south wing
Located at the end of the hallway, it has three salons. The smallest is in the tower in the south-west corner. The second and the large salon face due south. The latter, which is connected to the keep tower, features a remarkable painted Renaissance fireplace.
The ground floor of the keep has been converted into a large office/living room, and features another Renaissance fireplace.
The first floor
The spiral staircase from the ground floor hallway leads up to the first floor hallway. Approximately 28 m long, with plenty of natural light from the windows on the courtyard side, it has a French-style ceiling and a terracotta floor. It leads to the west wing with the so-called "red" bedroom, so named because of the silks hung on the walls and the fabric of the four-poster bed. It has a terracotta floor and a fireplace. It is connected to a bathroom which is shared with the room known as the "Hungarian Stitch" because of the tapestry motif. The "green" room and its annex in the tower sleep six. A large room with 18th century wood panelling connects with the first floor of the keep, where the thick walls have a rare painted frieze decoration at the top. On the opposite side, the north wing has three large bedrooms and a smaller one with three bathrooms. The largest of these has a coffered ceiling and 18th-century décor and is more intimate than most of the other rooms.
The tower
The spiral staircase extends right from the bottom of the château to the top floor of the imposing round tower - the keep - which dominates everything. The hoardings have been restored and their wooden-framed windows open onto the surrounding countryside.
The attic
The south and west wings have vast attic space of over 300 m² that can be converted.
The basement
The château is built over large cellars that were once the ground floor of the medieval fortress. Most of them have loopholes that are still in place.
The chapel
Located at the end of the south wing, next to the keep, the castle's Romanesque chapel is comparable to a small church. The barrel vault in the chancel is continued in the nave by a semi-circular vault covered with wood panelling. While it is possible to enter the sanctuary from the outside via the ground floor, the castle's residents enter directly from their apartments, via the gallery overlooking the nave.

The caretaker's cottage

A caretaker's cottage is located outside
the castle grounds. It opens onto the
courtyard shared by the residents. It has a
living area of almost 120 m², with around 860
m² of adjacent land.

The garages

A building housing the garage and woodshed opens onto the communal courtyard, opposite the caretaker's cottage.

The meadows

The property is surrounded by meadows and copses of trees growing alongside the moat and below the château, on the south and west sides, and covering an area of approximately 2 hectares.

The wooded plot

A wooded plot of almost 6,500 m² is located almost 500 m from the château.

Our opinion

This historic château, which is in excellent condition, is an enchanted place to live, where the succession of rooms, which are renovated in their original décor, enable you to take a step back in time, all the while enjoying the beautiful views of the surrounding countryside through the windows. It also boasts a remarkable history and architecture, set in a rural landscape just ten minutes from the heart of a modern town.
