A 17th century house in its verdant valley,
just a stone’s throw from the sea in the land of Celts
Plestin-les-Grèves, COTES-D'ARMOR brittany 22310 FR

Location

This stretch of land known as the “Golden belt”, straddling the borders of the Léon and Trégor regions, enjoys an astonishingly mild climate in winter as well as pleasant summer temperatures. The property, nestled in lush natural surroundings on the side of a valley, is so close to the sea that one can hear the waves of the rising tide crashing on the beach. Accessible via a road followed by a country lane, the small, remote hamlet, is only 3 km from the beach by car, while the humble, understated dwelling, located on a no-through road at the edge of the forest, only comes into view once past a small medicinal herb garden. In addition, Plestin-Les-Grèves, half-way between Lannion and Morlaix, with all necessary local shops and amenities, is just 5 minutes away by car, while the beach, a number of coves and, further on, the port of Locquémeau are easily accessible and provide seaside and recreational activities throughout the year as well as anchorage for those who own a pleasure craft. Lastly, the high-speed rail station in Plouaret-Trégor, 15 minutes away, provides access to the French capital in less than 3 hours.

Description

A sparsely-paved lane leads to a courtyard. The paved lanes then divide, leading, on the one hand, to the main house and, on the other, to the artist’s cottage. with a range of different zones boasting cosy ambiances, where the décor changes depending on time of day and the seasons, or on the light and the direction of the sun.

The main house and its unusual balcony

Two extensions have been added at right angles to the house. An impressive balcony, with its wooden railings, on the corner of the building, is like a promontory, ideal for being seen or for observing. It can be reached via an outside flight of stone steps. The gable roofs are covered either with interlocking tiles or with the thick, rustic Sizun slate tiles that come from the Arrée mountains. The walls are constructed from granite stone blocks. They house doors, one of which has a dressed stone semi-circular arch, and windows which could feature a transom or a crossbow lintel.

The ground floor
The semi-solid, large-paned front door opens onto a bright landing. The burgundy and cream chequered floor tiles lead to a rustic kitchen with a wood-burning stove. The walls are whitewashed and the ceiling boasts exposed beams. A few splashes of colour provide contrast, including the bright yellow doorframes and a water-green sofa. Two doors lead out, one to a small south-facing garden, the other to the main courtyard.
A lounge follows on from the kitchen. The materials are simple: the wood of the old lintels and wood stripped flooring combine nicely with the granite walls. The monumental fireplace is topped by an imposing hood. The many windows allow light to stream into the room. An overhanging mezzanine awaits conversion. An old-fashioned bathroom and lavatory are located under a staircase.
The first floor
The landing provides access to a large bedroom, spanning more than 25 m², with a granite fireplace. A small opening is adorned with warmly-coloured, stained glass. The muted character of this room is further enhanced by its parquet flooring and its original, exposed beams. A door opens on to the balcony, with its outstanding view over the luxuriant, natural surroundings. A bedroom has been converted at the other end of the landing. The omnipresent wood gives these premises a cosy atmosphere.

The artist’s cottage

This rectangular building has a slate gable roof. Two gabled dormers and roof windows allow the living rooms to be bathed in light. The facade features granite rubble stone and ashlar for the window frames. The red wooden window frames stand out in contrast to the stone.

The ground floor
A double patio door opens into a living room with kitchen, equipped with a wood-burning stove. The floor is paved with old terracotta tiles, while the walls are whitewashed, as in the main residence. The decor is both refined and rustic. A corridor leads to a bathroom and a lavatory with a burgundy and cream chequered floor. The lounge at the gable end opens onto a protruding wooden terrace, set on piles, with a view over the green valley.
The first floor
An atypically designed metal staircase leads up to the first floor. A door separates the landing from the vast, wood-panelled gallery, laid out under its rafters. At one end, a triangular, wrought-iron framed atrium window and a terrace look down on to the meadows and woods. This part of the house is dedicated to making music. A small bedroom completes this level.

The garden

A dressed stone well, a vegetable garden, an orchard, meadows, a henhouse, a herb garden, a woodshed and an area for pets as well as little nooks and crannies, exuding a variety of atmospheres and providing miscellaneous views, are all part of the garden’s abundant diversity. Pathways lead off towards the forest, the stream, the meadows and, of course, the sea. Those seeking to work the land will find fertile soil, those wishing to relax, trees for attaching hammocks and those planning to raise animals, paddocks.

Our opinion

This property is an enchanting place for nature lovers, artists, city dwellers looking for peace and quiet or all those who, in these ever-changing times, feel the need to recharge their batteries, look for creative inspiration or a find new home. A genuine refuge, this property is surrounded by a beautiful, unspoilt and natural environment, far removed from all disturbances, while guests will be delighted by the intimate and one-of-a-kind atmosphere of the courtyard, framed by two charming buildings. As for water sport enthusiasts, they will enjoy the proximity of the beaches of Saint-Kirio, Sables-Blancs or Velin Izella, popular with locals and barely visited by tourists.
